Director, Office of Research Safety
Clemson
University has an opening for the Director of the newly established Office of
Research Safety (ORS). The primary responsibility of this position is to
direct the administration and management of biological, chemical and
radiological safety programs for faculty, staff, students, and visitors at
Clemson University in compliance with applicable federal, state and local
regulations. Applicants must possess
strong leadership and management skills, have a minimum of a Masters or
equivalent degree in a related field of science, engineering or technology along
with 5 years of related experience in a multi-faceted health and safety
program. This new unclassified position
reports directly to the Assistant Vice President for Research Compliance.
Responsibilities
- Oversee
the development and implementation of programs that support the safe use of
biological, chemical and radiological (including x-rays and lasers) materials
on campus and at remote sites that are under the management of the campus
- Identify,
evaluate, and mitigate risks associated with the use of hazardous materials,
develop and administer programs to collect and dispose of hazardous waste, and
support the campus response for hazardous material emergencies.
- Develop
campus policies that support the safe use of biological, chemical and
radiological (including x-rays and lasers) materials
- Recommend
appropriate safety standards to the Vice President for Research and campus
administration, monitor emerging regulations, and identify compliance
requirements for campus research activities.
- Support
campus compliance committees that provide oversight of research activities
involving biological and radiological materials.
- Serve
on campus safety and safety-related committees, as needed or requested.
- Serve
as the campus liaison with applicable federal, state and local regulatory
agencies.
- Assist
the campus community in understanding and complying with applicable safety
guidelines, standards and regulations.
- Develop
and maintain partnerships with campus administrators, unit heads, faculty,
staff and students to increase safety awareness and encourage implementation of
unit safety programs.
- Provide
consulting services, safety training and cost effective, high quality programs
that are customer-driven.
- Oversee
the ORS financial and personnel portfolio and provide strategic leadership for
ORS staff.
- Collaborate
with managers and staff to develop ORS goals, vision and mission.
- Provide
team direction, motivate staff to achieve their goals, and maintain a
supportive work environment.
- Evaluate
staff needs and remove roadblocks that might interfere with staff work.
- Assess
and prioritize budgetary needs and provide oversight of ORS budget and
program-related expenditures.
- Pursue
professional development activities to expand knowledge and keep abreast of
developments in the health and safety field.
- Network
and collaborate with other university health and safety directors.
- Participate
and contribute as a member of appropriate professional health and safety
organizations (e.g. CSHEMA).
Qualifications
Education
- Masters or equivalent in relevant
field of science, engineering or technology
Experience
- With Masters degree: 5 years of
related experience in a multi-faceted health and safety program is
required.
- With a PhD: 2 years of related
experience in a multi-faceted health and safety program is required.
Strong
interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of
constituencies, excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as
management and supervisory experience are required. Professional certification
in an appropriate discipline is preferred. A valid driver's license is
required.
