Planning & Landscape Architecture Student Designs
Clemson's Restoration Institute is committed to addressing some of the most critical challenges of our time. A series of notable questions are facing the world today:
- How do we as a nation offer environmentally friendly, yet affordable sources of energy?
- How do we preserve our natural environment, while also embracing rational economic growth and development?
- How do we assure the safety of our population in the face of a crumbling and poorly maintained infrastructure, or alternatively, the increasing threat of natural disasters?
A Unique Approach to Finding Solutions
The Restoration Institute is devoted to finding solutions to these pressing questions. What makes this Institute unique is the integration of scientific disciplines across diverse interests toward a common vision of cultural preservation, ecological restoration, and sustainability for the future. These collective research and applied scientific endeavors will benefit families and children for years to come.
Designing a Campus that Illustrates the Mission
The campus for this innovative Institute is to be housed on the coast of South Carolina, in the city of Nort
h Charleston. Situated in one of the most historic cities in the U.S., and at the site of a former naval yard, this research center is suitably located for both cutting edge design and historical preservation. As one step in the campus's development, six students embarked on a journey to envision this campus. Through their work, it is possible to examine different approaches to bringing this campus to life.
Using this information as a reference point, experts in the application of sustainable building design principles will be formally commissioned. The selected architectural and engineering firm will create the master plan, utilizing a dedicated community engagement process that adheres to the highest standards for excellence in innovative research campus design.
