Community Revitalization Services

The faculty of Clemson's Restoration Institute has a long and successful track record of working with communities throughout South Carolina and around the world. Through extension services, work at Sandhill Research and Education Center, the Design Arts Partnership, the Center for Community Research and Design, and the a.LINE.ments Studio, faculty and students from landscape architecture, planning, horticulture, real estate development, civil engineering, architecture, and other programs have assisted communities in their revitalization efforts. These consultations have taken place in the wake of immediate and rapid change, as well as the gradual erosion that takes place as a result of a depressed economy and/or significant long-term neglect.

The scope of work for the Community Revitalization team encompasses design, planning and management services to:

  • Plan for the integration and management of watersheds, urban forests, multi-modal transportation systems, and other land uses for air and water quality
  • Plan for and design walkable and safe neighborhoods
  • Design “green,” LEED-certified health care facilities and therapeutic landscapes and gardens
  • Design and construct healthy buildings, in particular schools, with maximum natural daylight and interior products finished with low toxic emissions
  • Incorporate new design approaches and materials that enhance the structural integrity of buildings, bridges, transportation systems and other infrastructure components
  • Plan for the retention of landmarks, historical patterns and natural landscapes to maintain the cultural heritage of local communities
