The following letter was sent to currently enrolled students but the changes will also affect new freshman and transfer advising at summer orientation. Recommendations for freshmen and transfers entering this fall have been added in bold type and follow the original text.
Dear Students:
Due to budget and staffing constraints and the fact that the overwhelming number of Spanish students enter Clemson having already had several years of high school experience (THOSE STUDENTS NEED TO SIGN UP FOR SPANISH 104), we may not offer any sections of 101 Spanish in the Fall.
New Freshmen and Transfers must take the Foreign Language Placement Test (FLPT) at orientation and enroll in the appropriate course based on their score. They will not be allowed to remain in a lower level course than determined by their FLPT score. The FLPT is required only for those students with experience in a language in which they intend to continue.
Any student who has had 2 or more years of Spanish language experience and places in either 101 or 102 should enroll in Span 104 in the fall or in the spring. Spanish 101 will be limited to those who are actually true beginners.
Here is what you can do at this point:
1) YOUR BEST OPTION: Consider taking the 100-level in Summer School. We are offering both 101 and 102 in summer.
Encourage new freshmen and transfer students to start their course work during second session summer if possible.
2) If you cannot take summer, send me your official name, student ID number, and preferred section. I am keeping a waiting list to see if we have enough demand to open the two tentatively scheduled sections of Spanish 101. You may want to get a hold of a copy of your High School transcripts as we may require proof that you are a true beginner.
3) MOST IMPORTANT: If you cannot do summer classes, put your name on the REQUEST LOG for 101 for the FALL. This is the most efficient way of communicating the need to the Administration.
New freshmen and transfers should use the Request Log feature as needed when registering for classes during orientation.
4) CHECK YOUR CLEMSON E-MAIL OVER THE NEXT FEW MONTHS. We will send you information about the status of your request and the class at THAT ADDRESS ONLY.
New freshmen and transfers will be instructed about their CU e-mail accounts when they log on to the orientation web site to reserve a space for orientation. They should be able to receive information regarding their requests.
I feel sure that you will be able to do what you need to do, if you follow these suggestions.
Sincerely,
Scott Harris
