Job Title: Field Veterinarian/Extension Veterinarian (2 positions available)
Location: Livestock Poultry Health, Columbia, SC

These positions will be headquartered in Columbia, SC at Livestock Poultry Health and will serve as field veterinarians in Animal Health Programs. Successful candidates will also share along with full professional staff of Animal Health Programs newly accepted role of extension veterinarian for SC.

 

Position Description

 

JOB PURPOSE:
As a field veterinarian, employee will conduct & enforce programs, procedures, laws, rules and regulations to control and eradicate infectious diseases of livestock and poultry in SC. These programs include disease control and eradication, livestock disease surveillance, animal identification and movement, biosecurity procedures, and animal emergency response. Employee will also serve as an extension veterinary educator and coordinate activities with the extension livestock & forages program team. Employee is expected to apply for grants and cooperative agreements that can enhance the departments' mission related activities.

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Participate in various programs and activities for the purposes of diagnosis, monitoring, controlling, and eradicating contagious, infectious, and emerging diseases of livestock and poultry, regulating and monitoring the intrastate and interstate movement of animals, and establishing standards for the operation of auction markets, sales and other concentration points for animals.   2. Work collaboratively with Extension faculty, practicing veterinarians, livestock producers and others to provide educational support regarding animal diseases, promoting farm risk management education and disease prevention. Providing continuing education opportunities for SC veterinarians is a priority. E/30%
  3. Research and apply for relevant cooperative agreements and grants to increase financial resources available to Livestock Poultry Health & Cooperative Extension Service to carry out their missions. E/15%
  4. Participate, promote, and/or conduct outreach and training activities including but not limited to on farm biosecurity, disease prevention, premises identification, National Animal Identification System (NAIS), and others related to Animal Health Programs/Livestock Extension mission. E/15%
  5. Support undergraduate and graduate teaching and research where possible and collaborate in other research important to the University. NE/5%
  6. Perform other related duties as required. NE/5%

 

QUALIFICATIONS:
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree with experience/expertise in food animal practice, food animal regulatory work, and/or extension service. Eligible for license to practice veterinary medicine in SC. Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record. Five years experience in food animal practice, food animal regulatory work, or as an extension veterinarian preferred.
License to practice veterinary medicine in one or more of the fifty states and current accreditation by USDA APHIS VS. Ability to work and communicate effectively with Clemson (both LPH & Extension) staff, private veterinarians, animal agriculture producers, USDA APHIS VS personnel, and the general public. Ability to deliver effective education program for animal agriculture producers and large animal veterinarians.

 

Pay & Work Schedule:
Standard Hrs: 37.5; Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Position is 37.50 hours per week but is subject to 24-7 call as necessary to fulfill the duties of the department. Position will require some overnight travel (in-state and out-of-state) and extensive driving. Employee will function both as a field veterinarian with Animal Health Programs and as an extension veterinarian.
