You've decided that you want to study abroad--that's great! You may now be looking for sources to fund this important academic experience. First, you should check with the Clemson Financial Aid office, as well as start thinking about your personal budget.
You may also be interested in investigating the following scholarships. Be sure to start the application process as early as possible and check the individual websites for deadlines. Often application materials are due 6 months or more ahead of the start of your program.

Anne Wexler Scholarship Program in Public Policy
The Anne Wexler Scholarship provides funding to an American citizen and an Australian citizen to complete a Master's program in Public Policy. Areas of study may include health, sustainability, energy, climate change, regional security, political science, history, or government relations, among others. Two scholarships will be awarded each year, one to an Australian citizen to complete a US Master's program, and one to an American citizen to complete an Australian Master's program. The scholarship covers tuition, a stipend, travel expenses, and insurance for a maximum of two years, depending on Master's program.
Australian Government Endeavour Awards
Internationally competitive, merit-based scholarship program provides opportunities for citizens of the Asia-Pacific, Middle East, Europe and Americas to undertake study, research and professional development in Australia. The Endeavour Postgraduate Awards cover up to two years for a master's degree and 3.5 years for a PhD. US citizens (as well as citizens from other eligible countries) are invited to apply for the Endeavour Postgraduate Awards. All Endeavour Award categories will be offered for the 2013 academic year.
Boren Scholarships and Fellowships
The Institute of International Education awards Boren Scholarships for undergraduate students and Boren Fellowships for graduate students. Boren Awards provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. students to add important international and language components to their education. These scholarships are to study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin American, and the Middle East. The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded. Boren Scholarships (for undergraduates) provide up to $20,000 for an academic year abroad. Boren Fellowships (for graduate students) provide up to $30,000 for language study and international research. The Boren Scholarship and Fellowship internal deadline is generally late January of the year preceding the abroad experience. Students must submit application materials and essays to Dr. Stephen Wainscott in the Office of Global Engagement for university approval before this deadline. Bridging Scholarships for Study in Japan
This scholarship provides a stipend for undergraduate students participating in a study abroad program in Japan. Students in any major are eligible and Japanese language ability is not required. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Selection is based on academic potential and financial need.
British Council - Scholarships for study in the UK
The British Council provides a list of scholarships available to U.S. citizens for study at universities in the UK. This list includes both graduate and undergraduate scholarships. The deadline for this scholarship varies.
Chinese Government Scholarship Program - Beijing Forestry University

Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals (CBYX)
Provides fellowships for students and recent graduates who are interested in living, studying, and interning in Germany for a full-year. CBYX is sponsored by the US and German governments for applicants in all career fields between the ages of 18-24, and does not require any prior German language knowledge. Applicants in business, vocational, technical, engineering, scientific, and agricultural fields are especially encouraged to apply.
Critical Language Scholarship Program 2013
The United States Department of State offers the Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program for overseas intensive summer language institutes in thirteen critical need foreign languages. CLS institutes provide fully-funded group-based intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences for seven to ten weeks for U.S. citizen undergraduate and graduate students. Students may apply for one language, and will be placed at institute sites based on language evaluations after selection. Students in all disciplines are eligible. Brochure.
DAAD Scholarship Programs for Study and Research in Germany
DAAD grants are available to faculty and students in Canada and the United States to participate in various academic activities. In general, applicants need to be U.S. or Canadian citizens or permanent residents. In certain cases foreign nationals enrolled or employed at universities in North America may also be eligible to apply. The deadline for this scholarship varies.

European Scholarship Portal
This on-line scholarship database provides information on all scholarships offered for studying in Europe. The database contains over 700 scholarship programs. Students can find and compare relevant programs based on their nationality, background, where and what they want to study, and other search criteria. The deadlines for these scholarships vary.
First Generation Scholar Program
This scholarship, available only to students who are studying on an IFSA-Butler third party program, provides recipients with up to $2,500 in scholarship funding. This can be used towards tuition and housing costs, flight transportation, student visa fee reimbursement and passport reimbursement. Students must be studying abroad for a semester or a year and must be a first generation college student to apply.
Fund for Education Abroad (FEA)
The Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) provides scholarships for U.S. undergraduate students who are participating in high-quality, rigorous education abroad programs during the 2014-2015 academic year or summer 2014. Students must plan to study abroad for at least four weeks. Up to $10,000 in scholarship funding is available. The application can be found online, and the deadline to apply will be in January 2014.
Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship
The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship provides awards for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study abroad programs worldwide. The program aims to diversify the kinds of students who study abroad and the countries and regions where they go by supporting undergraduates who might otherwise not participate due to financial constraints. The Gilman International Scholarship program now includes additional funding for students studying Critical Need Languages. Students who apply for and receive the Gilman Scholarship to study abroad are eligible to receive an additional $3,000 Critical Need Language Supplement for a total possible award of up to $8,000. Summer and Fall 2013 online applications are now open and are due by March 5, 2013.

GTOS (Guide to Online Schools) Study Abroad Scholarship
An unconventional scholarship that judges students based on their innovation and reasoning as well as financial need. The scholarship application asks students to answer a series of open-ended, personal, and thought provoking questions. Applicants must be legal residents of the United States, at least 16 years old, and enrolled in a school-related study abroad program. There are no minimum requirements regarding the duration of travel.
Pamela Harriman Foreign Service Fellowship
This is a highly competitive fellowship (3 per year) offered through the College of William and Mary. The fellowship provides an eleven-week summer service opportunity with the U.S. Department of State plus a $5,000 stipend at one of three posts: the U.S. Embassy in Paris, the U.S. Embassy in London or the Office of the Secretary of State in Washington. The application deadline is in November.

Institute of International Education Grants
The Institute of International Education manages over 250 programs for international study and offers numerous grants and awards for these programs. Inter-American Foundation Fellowships for PhD Candidates
These fellowships support dissertation research in Latin America and the Caribbean undertaken by students who have advanced to Ph.D. candidacy in a university in the United States. Fellows must be U.S. citizens or citizens of an independent country in Latin American or the Caribbean, except Cuba. Proficiency in the language(s) appropriate to the research proposal is required.

Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarships
The Japanese Government's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) offers scholarships for academic study in Japan to foreign students interested in deepening their understanding of the Japanese language, Japanese affairs and Japanese culture. The deadline for this scholarship varies.
Killam Fellowship Program
The Killam Fellowships Program provides an opportunity for undergraduate students from universities in the United States to spend either one semester or a full academic year as an exchange student in Canada. Scholarship recipients receive $5,000/semester, and students can apply to any of the participating Canadian Universities. Please turn in application materials to Dr. Sharon Nagy in the Office of Global Engagement. For additional information about the Killam Fellowship Program, contact either Dr. Sharon Nagy or Dr. Lesly Temesvari in the Department of Biological Sciences for more information. The internal deadline for this scholarship is generally in January preceding the academic year the student wants to be abroad.
National Security Education Program
This scholarship seeks to increase the ability of Americans to communicate and compete globally by understanding the languages and cultures of other countries. Each year, NSEP offers American undergraduate and graduate students scholarships to enhance their understanding of cultures and languages critical to U.S. national security. These scholarships are valid for study in countries outside Western Europe, Canada, Australia or New Zealand. Open to U.S. citizens in a degree-granting program.
North American Language & Culture Assistants in Spain
The North American Language & Culture Assistants Program is coordinated by the Spanish Ministry of Education. It gives juniors and seniors, as well as recent graduates, a chance to share their language and culture in the K-12 and language school system of Spain. Assistants receive a monthly allowance, insurance, and an orientation. Applications are taken December through March for the following academic year.
Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grants
The Honor Society Phi Kappa Phi offers 50 Study Abroad Grants of $1000 each to help support undergraduates as they seek knowledge and experience in their academic fields by studying abroad. Students do not have to be members of Phi Kappa Phi to apply for this scholarship. Applicants must have a GPA of at least a 3.75. Application deadline: April 1, 2013
Rhodes Scholarships
Rhodes Scholars study for two or three years at Oxford University in the United Kingdom. Study can be in any field and at the undergraduate or graduate level and must lead to a degree. Some Rhodes Scholars study the last two years of an undergraduate major while others do graduate study abroad. The Rhodes scholarship pays for tuition, fees, travel to and from Oxford, and an allowance that is sufficient to pay living costs during the academic year and vacation periods. Rotary International Scholarships
Rotary International offers very generous scholarships through its Ambassadorial Scholarships Program. It is the world's largest privately funded international scholarships program. Turkish Coalition of America
The Turkish Coalition of America awards up to 100 scholarships per year for American minority students. These scholarships are awarded to eligible undergraduate and graduate level students who are studying in Turkey or in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). This scholarship program is administered by Diversity Abroad, an independent organization dedicated to increasing the participation of minority students in study abroad programs.
Whitaker International Undergraduate Program
The Whitaker International Program, administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE), provides scholarships for undergraduate students enrolled in a biomedical engineering or bioengineering degree program. Students must be studying abroad for one semester or a full academic year. To be eligible to apply, students must have U.S. citizenship or be a permanent resident of the U.S., have at least sophomore standing and have at least one semester remaining, and demonstrate a need for financial support to participate in study abroad. Award amounts range from $7,500 for a semester program to $10,000 for an academic year program.
