The Department of Biological Sciences recently raised $668.50 for the "Clemson Free Clinic" during a holiday fundraiser.  The Clemson Free Clinic provides medical care and medication to low-income residents who meet qualifications.

Christopher Awttaway Receives Honors

Christopher AttawayChristopher Attaway, a rising junior in Biological Sciences, has been awarded an ASM Undergraduate Research Fellowship to study the human parasite, Entamoeba histolytica.  This pathogen is the causative agent of amoebic dysentery and infects 50,000,000 people annually.  Christopher will carry out his research project in the laboratory of Dr. Lesly Temesvari.  The award provides funds that will be used to support a summer stipend, travel to the National ASM Meeting in Philadelphia in 2009, and membership in the ASM.  The Department of Biological Sciences wishes Christopher well as he undertakes this research endeavor. 

Attaway & Patel Awarded Killam Fellowships

Two Biological Sciences students are the first to be awarded prestigious Killam Fellowships to study abroad in Canada.  PatelChristopher Attaway, a rising junior in Biological Sciences, will spend the Spring 2009 semester at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec.  Mansi Patel, a rising junior in Microbiology, will spend the Spring 2009 semester at Queens University in Kingston, Ontario.  The Killam Fellowships Program allows undergraduate students to participate in a residential exchange program between Canada and the USA during their junior year. Rivera Wins Distinguished Achievement Fellowship Award

Gabe RiveraGabe Rivera has won the Distinguished Achievement Fellowship Award from the Graduate School.

This is given to a Doctoral Student who has distinguished themselves in research, professional service and teaching during their doctoral career.  The successful candidate must at a minimum have presented papers at meetings, had papers accepted for publication in journals and attended professional development workshops. Other criteria include being nominated for academic or research awards, giving guest lectures, mentoring students, performing service and making significant contributions to sponsored research and grant proposals.

Gabe is the first student nominee from Biological Sciences to win this award.

One of our recent graduates recently earned many honors. Graduating with her Ph.D. in BioMedical Sciences in May from the University of South Carolina, Dr. Teresa L. Nesbitt received the Graduate Student of the Year Award from her department. She authored 3 publications, two of which she was first author. Dr. Nesbitt was accepted into five medical schools and decided to attend The George Washington University. She will begin her studies in the fall 2007 semester. Congratulations Dr. Nesbitt!

Dr. Amy MoranDr. Amy Moran, an Assistant Professor in Biological Sciences, is featured in the Spring Edition of Clemson World in an article titled "Extreme Biology." Dr. Moran is featured for her research in the Antarctica. She was also interviewed on NBC's Today Show in the Fall of 2007. Read more about Dr. Moran's research on her lab site.

Dr. Jerry WaldvogelDr. Jerry Waldvogel, a Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, has been named the 2008 recipient of the Robert S. Campbell Award for Faculty Achievement in Communication Across the Curriculum. The Campbell Award is presented by the Pearce Center for Professional Communication. Dr. Jeremy TzengDr. Jeremy Tzeng, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences was recently interviewed for a radio news story on the The Environment Report, a national environment & science news service that airs on 145 National Public Radio stations. Tzeng discussed his research of "intelligent chicken feed," which through the use of nanomaterial research would eventually be used to purge harmful bacteria from chickens. Dr. Robert KosinskiDr. Robert Kosinski, a Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences was honored in May with the 2007 Alumni Master Teacher award. This award is presented for outstanding undergraduate classroom instruction, to a faculty member nominated by the student body and selected by the Student Alumni Council. Dr. Tamara McNealy was recently awarded the ASMCUE 2007 Early-Career Faculty Travel Grant. This grant will allow Dr. McNealy to travel and participate in the 14th annual ASM Conference for Undergraduate Educators (ASMCUE) from May 18-20, 2007 at the University of Buffalo - SUNY North Campus in New York. Dr. McNealy is one of 12 recipient who received this grant. Please congratulate her when you see her.

Expeditions Web site logoClemson University's "Expeditions with Patrick McMillan" recently won a bronze Telly Award for outstanding public television series in the nature and wildlife category. The Telly Award honors the very best local, regional, and cable television commercials and programs, as well as the finest video and film productions. It receives more than 13,000 entries from around the country. The show can be seen Sundays at 7:30pm on SC-ETV and the SC Channel. Please congratulate Patrick when you see him.

David Jacobs, a sophomore microbiology major, was recently awarded the SC Life HHMI International Research Experience Grant. David is a 491 student in Dr. Tamara McNealy's lab. The grant will allow David to travel to Croatia this summer and spend 6 weeks working in the lab of Dr. Marina Santic at the University of Rijeka. She also works on the bacteria Francisella tularensis as the McNealy lab does – but Dr. Santic concentrates her work on unraveling the mechanisms of cell death including apoptosis, pyroptosis and autophagy. David will benefit from the Santic lab expertise in confocal laser scanning and electron microscopy in dissecting various aspects of manipulations of the cell by F. tularensis. Congratulations David!

Expeditions with Patrick McMillan, a series of half-hour shows picked up by ETV and ETV's South Carolina Channel (exclusively on cable), will air on Sunday nights, beginning Jan. 14, at 7:30 p.m.

The first episode will find McMillan, Clemson lecturer and host and co-creator of the series, and guest explorer Nancy Neal, trekking through the salt marshes of South Carolina and chatting about fiddler crabs, cord grass and Native American shell rings. In accessible documentary format, the show explores various regions of the Carolinas with an emphasis on the areas' unique treasures.

Tom Neal, a 19-year Clemson veteran, is co-creator, director and
producer of the show.
