How did you become involved in education? My first experience in teaching at the university level was at Furman University in 1984 after completing my Masters of Accountancy at Clemson University. I entered public accounting full-time the following year and did not return to teaching for 5 years. In 1990 I started my own CPA firm specializing in setting up small computer systems and providing training on how to use the system. It was great because I was teaching a new workplace skill entirely created by low cost computers and simple accounting packages, yes technology is just starting to hit the masses. How long have you been involved in education? 28th year! I became a full-time professor at Erskine College in 1992 and have continued to operate my CPA public accounting practice. I have spent over 12 years producing and speaking at full day continuing education seminars for accountants on accounting, auditing, and data protection and privacy updates through my company A&A Update and Review. Which courses have you taught? I have taught Introduction Financial, Accounting, Intermediate I, II, & III, Advanced Accounting, Governmental Accounting, Audit, Introduction Management, Cost, MBA Management Review/leveling course, Individual Tax, and Corporate Tax. What are your favorite research topics? Accounting, auditing, data privacy and protection, and creative, interactive teaching techniques utilizing technology and on-line resources are my favorite research topics. In my Continuing Professional Education seminars, I utilize innovative technology to provide CPAs with the latest accounting and auditing updates as well as on-line resources to offer CPAs insight into the emerging trends in accounting today. I have spoken at Continuing Professional Education events for A & A Update and Review, Inc., CPE Link, Georgia Society of CPAs, Nichols Patrick CPE, Inc., Lorman Education Services, North Carolina Society of CPAs, Ohio Society of CPAs, SC Association of CPAs, and Stravolo Wealth Management. My courses have been offered throughout Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, Michigan, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Tennessee. Professional Organizations: I am the current Treasurer and Past President of the SC Association of Accounting Educators and past Chair of the SC Association of CPA Accounting Careers/Academic Relations Task Force I am a member of the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA), Institute of Management Accountants (IMA), South Carolina Association of CPAs (SCACPA), Piedmont Chapter of SCACPA, and SC Association of Accounting Educators (SCAAE). Professional Certifications: CPA: Certified Public Accountant CMA: Certified Management Accountant CGMA: Chartered Global Management Accountant QM (Quality Matters) Peer Reviewer for online courses Sloan-C Online Teaching Certificate Clemson Online Certified Instructor: CU Online Certified-Instructor logo Do you have any interests or expertise you would like to share with others? I have owned and operated my own businesses since 1990 and my Continuing Education Seminars I conducted during this time have allowed me to learn how public accounting firms and industry are leveraging technology today for cost efficiencies as well as productivity. I try to make my classes resemble the workplace students will enter so they will have the mindset and the skills to effectively use technology in their career. The same technology tools, social media and games students currently use are also extensively used in the workplace. KyleTV I produce concept videos for every course I have or currently teach at Clemson. Please use the links at the bottom of the page to access KyleTV for other courses. Be sure to download to your computer for best playing result. What is one thing you think is most important for others to know about you? I am not your traditional CPA. I learned very quickly that paper and pencil were just not my friends so my love of technology started with my Commodore 64 in a Big 8 accounting firm. Since that time I have embraced technology in my businesses as well as my classroom and still find it fun. Outside of the classroom, my wife, Lani and I are active in planning and leading outdoor trips for Boy Scout Troop 215 and the Six and Twenty District of BSA in Anderson SC. I am an avid kayaker, cyclist, mountain biker, and hiker and spend my free time white water kayaking, camping, hiking and boating on Lake Hartwell with Lani and our two sons, Ian and Dylan.
