“Nuestra América”: Territory and Place
Architecture has paid little attention to José Martí’s “Nuestra América.” The intent of this essay is to look at Martí’s ideas through a lens that sees the built environment—the physical inhabitation of the territory—as the prime generator of a contemporary praxis, as a way of thinking and making to guide architecture in defining the inhabitation of place. “Nuestra América” was born in the realm of politics, recalling an antiquity where architects served as designers of fortifications, making the territory safe from foreign aggression: “Estratégia es política” (Strategy is politics).
