Career Options for MAPC Graduates

Our MAPC graduates are thriving in a variety of career fields.  Most of our students become technical writers or editors, teachers, web designers, or public relations professionals.  The MAPC degree allows for much versatility, and many of our graduates rise to leadership positions.  See our where-are-they-now page for a list of jobs held by MAPC alumni.

Graduates work in large corporations, small consulting firms, non-profits, government agencies, and colleges and universities.  For example, MAPC graduates work for companies including IBM, Sapient, Fluor Corporation, TSYS, Microsoft, Booz Allen Hamilton, VIEW Digital Media, Verizon, and Carolinas Healthcare System, to name only a few.  Graduates also work for a variety of two-year and four-year colleges and universities, including Armstrong Atlantic State University, Clemson University, Elon University, Miami University of Ohio, and Tri-County Technical College.  Our alumni hold positions at non-profits from Safe Harbor to the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, as well as for companies that provide services to non-profits, such as Blackbaud, Inc. and Spitfire Strategies.

Some of our students pursue Ph.D. degrees and become active scholars and teachers in the field of professional communication. Our graduates have entered Ph.D. programs at prestigious institutions including Purdue, Michigan Tech, Iowa State, Minnesota, and Miami of Ohio.

Career Day EventAt the 2010 MAPC Career Day event, 18 alumni returned to campus to share their experiences with students and faculty.  At left are some of the attendees on the industry-jobs panel.  The alumni ranged from a 1998 graduate to a 2009 graduate and from web designers to writers to teachers.  Our alumni are active participants in the MAPC program and a valuable resource for our students.  Many current students contact alumni regularly to seek career advice.

Many of our students also participate in the Society for Technical Communication.  A group of MAPC students began a student chapter in 2008; MAPC students also participate in the local UpState chapter.  Through the STC, students gain career advice from communication practitioners in the field.  The group also connects students with job opportunities and career development in the area.

The background in communication theory and practice provided by the MAPC program allows our graduates to contribute in almost any workplace.  Please see our alumni profiles and alumni news for more information on the career success of MAPC alumni.
