Scot Barnett, Assistant Professor, joined the Clemson faculty in 2010 after receiving his Ph.D. in Composition and Rhetoric from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His teaching and research interests include histories and theories of rhetoric, philosophies of science and technology, and ethics and phenomenology. His publications include an essay review of rhetoric and object-oriented philosophy in the journal Enculturation: A Journal of Rhetoric, Writing, and Culture. Dr. Barnett is also currently at work on a book-length project tentatively titled Arts of Concealment: Rhetoric and Ethics in the Age of Wireless Computing.

David Blakesley, Campbell Chair in Technical Communication and Professor of English, joined the Clemson faculty in 2010. He earned his PhD from the University of Southern California in 1990in Rhetoric, Linguistics and Literature. Dr. Blakesley teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in digital and print publishing, rhetorical theory, visual rhetorics, information design and architecture and multimedia writing in virtual and game worlds. He has authored, co-authored or edited five books: The Elements of Dramatism (Longman, 2002), The Terministic Screen: Rhetorical Perspectives on Film (SIUP, 2003, 2007), Late Poems, 1968-1993 by Kenneth Burke (University of South Carolina Press, 2005), Writing: A Manual for the Digital Age (Comprehensive and Brief editions; Cengage, 2008-2009). His articles have appeared in WPA: Writing Program Administration, JAC: A Journal of Composition Theory, Rhetoric Society Quarterly, The Writing Instructor, First Monday, Kairos and numerous other journals and anthologies. In 2002, he founded Parlor Press, a scholarly publishing company. In 2009, Dr. Blakesley received the Charles Moran Award for Distinguished Contributions to the Field from Computers and Composition.

Huiling Ding, Assistant Professor, joined the MAPC faculty in August 2007. She received her PhD in Rhetoric and Composition from Purdue University. She teaches courses such as research methods and technical writing for nursing students. Her research interests include intercultural professional communication, health communication, workplace and disciplinary writing, and comparative rhetoric. She has published in journals such as Rhetoric Review and English for Specific Purposes.

Teddi Fishman, Director of the Center for Academic Integrity, joined the Clemson faculty in 2002.  She received her PhD in Rhetoric and Composition from Purdue University.  Dr. Fishman has taught courses in rhetoric, visual communication, and electronic communication and her research focuses on rhetoric and technology, digital rhetoric, civic rhetoric, distance education, and professional communication.  She has published in Kairos, on online peer-reviewed rhetoric journal, and has presented her work at conferences including Conference on College Composition and Communication, Computers and Writing, and Writing Across the Curriculum.  Dr. Fishman was named the Clemson University nominee for the 2007 Boyer Award for Innovative Excellence in Teaching, Learning, and Technology from the Conference on College Teaching and Learning.

Cynthia Haynes, Associate Professor and Director of First-Year Composition, joined the Clemson faculty in 2006. She received her Ph.D. from The University of Texas at Arlington in 1994concentrating in Rhetoric, Composition, and Critical Theory.Dr. Haynes teaches graduate courses in visual rhetorics and composition theory and pedagogy. Her research areas include rhetoric and composition theory and pedagogy, digital rhetorics, computer game studies, critical theory, innovative communication, multimodal composition, contemporary French and German philosophy, political rhetorics, and feminist theory.  She has published in major journals such as JAC, Pre/Text, Games and Culture, Enculturation, Kairos, and The Writing Center Journal.  Her most recent book is entitled MOOniversity: A Student’s Guide to Online Learning Environments. Co-authored with MAPC faculty member Jan Rune Holmevik, the book was published by Allyn & Bacon/Longman in 2000.  In 2003, Dr. Haynes was awarded the James L. Kinneavy Award for best article in JAC by the Association of Teachers of Advanced Composition.

Susan Hilligoss, Professor, has taught graduate and undergraduate courses in Visual Communication, Medieval Literature, Chaucer, Technical Writing, and Advanced Expository Writing since joining the Clemson faculty in 1983.  She received her Ph.D in English from the University of Pennsylvania.  Dr. Hilligoss’ research areas include visual communication and theories about the visual, technology and writing, creative nonfiction, gender and LGBT studies.  Her most recent book publication is Visual Communication: A Writer’s Guide 2nd edition, co-authored with MAPC faculty member Tharon Howard, published by Longman in 2001.  Dr. Hilligoss received the Ellen Nold Award for Best Article in Computers and Composition Studies in 2000.  Additionally, she served as Director of the MAPC program (1992-96) and Associate Dean of the College of AAH (1999-2001). As an undergraduate at Michigan, she minored in mathematics. She is a diversity trainer and a Safe Zone ally.

Jan Rune Holmevik, Assistant Professor, received his Ph.D. in Humanistic Informatics at the University of Bergen, Norway, in  2004.  Dr. Holmevik teaches courses in Visual Communication, Advanced Business and Technical Writing, and Computer Game Studies.  His research areas include computer games research and development, online learning environments, professional communication, programming, and humanistic informatics. He has had extensive experience in the field working as an independent consultant, programmer, and as a project manager for the development of a Massively-Multiplayer Game in Copenhagen, Denmark.  His most recent book is Inside Innovation: The History of the SIMULA Programming Languages published by Simula Research Laboratory in 2005.  In 2000, Dr. Holmevik received first place at the Computers and Writing Technology Competition for his project entitled Rhetoric and Writing Software in University Education.

Tharon Howard, Professor and Director of the Multimedia Authoring, Teaching and Research Facility (MATRF) and the Usability Testing Facility (UTF), joined the Clemson faculty in 1992.  He received his Ph.D in Rhetoric from Purdue University.  Dr. Howard teaches graduate courses in Rhetorics, Communication, and Information Technologies; Usability Testing Methodologies; and Digital Publishing; among others.  His research areas include professional communication, usability testing & user experience design, multimedia authoring, digital publishing, instructional technology design, and digital rhetorics.  Dr. Howard has published in several major journals including the Journal for the Society of Technical Communication, Journal of Business and Technical Communication, and IBM Systems Journal; and his most recent book entitled Visual Communication: A Writer’s Guide 2nd Edition, co-authored with MAPC faculty member Susan Hilligoss, was published by Longman in 2001.  Dr. Howard served as Director of the MAPC program from 1999 through 2005.  Among his many awards and accolades, Dr. Howard received the Society for Technical Communication’s Distinguished SIG Service Award in 2001 as well as the Usability Professionals Association’s Extraordinary Service Award in 1998.

Martin Jacobi, Professor, joined the Clemson faculty in 1984 after receiving his Ph.D. in Rhetoric from the University of Oregon.  Dr. Jacobi teaches courses in classical rhetoric, modern rhetoric, and dramatic literature.  His research areas include rhetorical theory and the relationship of rhetoric to dramatic literature. Dr. Jacobi has published in major journals including Journal of Advanced Composition, Rhetoric Society Quarterly, Journal of Business Communication, and South Atlantic Review.  His most recent book, published by Greenwood Press in 1993 and co-authored with Bernard Duffy, is titled The Politics of Rhetoric: Richard M. Weaver and the Conservative Tradition.  He is currently working on book-length study of Wayne C. Booth.

Steven Katz, Pearce Professor of Professional Communication, joined the Clemson faculty in 2006. He received his Ph.D. in Communication and Rhetoric from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1988. Dr. Katz teaches graduate courses in rhetoric and professional communication. His research areas include rhetorical analysis of science and technology, scientific and medical communication, technical communication and ideologies/ethics, histories of rhetoric, and rhetorics of style. Dr. Katz has published in major journals in the field, including Technical Communication Quarterly, Journal of Business and Technical Communication, College Composition and Communication, College English, and Rhetoric Society Quarterly. He also has published three books. His most recent book is the 2nd edition of Writing in the Sciences: Exploring Conventions of Scientific Discourse, co-authored with Ann Penrose and published in 2004 by Allyn & Bacon/Longman. In 1993, Dr. Katz won a National Council of Teachers of English Award for his article on "The Ethic of Expediency." Dr. Katz has published over 400 poems and a chapbook of poems as well, and plays guitar as part of a Jewish folk/rock/blues band in Raleigh (NC), with whom he has made two albums and still occasionally performs.

Scott A. Mogull, Assistant Professor, joined the Clemson faculty in 2010 after completing a PhD in Technical Communication and Rhetoric at Texas Tech University. He has one Master’s Degree in Technical Communication/Human Centered Design & Engineering and another in Microbiology. Scott is currently researching pharmaceutical marketing and has published some of this research in the American Medical Writers Association Journal. He is also interested in science/scientific communication and has published this in the STC journal Technical Communication, which is being reprinted in the book Qualitative Research in Technical Communication. Scott has a first-author scientific publication in the journal Infection & Immunity. He also worked for eight years in the biotechnology/pharmaceutical industry with positions that include technical writer, information manager, website developer, product manager, and marketing manager. Scott serves as the as Development Editor for the journal Technical Communication Quarterly.

Sean Morey, Assistant Professor, joined the Clemson faculty in 2010 after receiving his Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition from the University of Florida. His current research interests include electracy, new media, rhetoric and composition theory, visual rhetoric, environmental rhetoric, and professional communication. He published on the interplay between environmental and visual rhetorics in Ecosee: Image, Rhetoric, Nature (co-edited with Sidney I. Dobrin), and is currently working on a visual rhetoric textbook for Fountainhead Press. Previously, he designed, edited, and maintained the Ichthyology Division’s Web site at the Florida Museum of Natural History, including the website for the International Shark Attack File, and various other elasmobranch conservation organizations.

Dr. Sean Williams

Sean Williams, Associate Professor and Associate Dean of the Graduate School, joined the Clemson faculty in 1999 after receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Washington in English with a specialization in Web-Based Communication and Rhetoric.  Dr. Williams teaches graduate courses in visual communication, digital publishing, workplace communication, and information design.  His research areas include user experience design, technical communication, visual communication, and professionalization issues in technical communication.  Additionally, Dr. Williams has worked extensively in the printing and design industries from his first job of making copies to work in desktop publishing and now web publishing.  He continues to work with industry, regularly serving as a consultant on web-based information projects as well as training and editing.  Dr. Williams has published in major journals including Technical Communication, Intercom, and Computers and Writing.  He is a competitive triathlete having competed in over 20 events ranging from short courses through full ironman distance races.
