book coverProfessor Suggs, an expert on the African-American press, is a founder and former chair of the college's African American Studies Program. Before retiring in 2003, he taught courses on African American history, the African Diaspora, and the American South. Dr. Suggs is the author of numerous publications, including a recent essay on Harvey Gantt and the desegregation of Clemson in 1963; his books include two edited volumes, The Black Press in the South, 1865-1979 (1983) and The Black Press in the Middle West, 1865-1985 (1996) as well as P.B. Young, Newspaperman: Race, Politics, and Journalism in the New South (1988).
