Student Employment and Internships


The Office of Campus Recreation, featuring the Swann Fitness Center, relies on student employees to fill a number of positions throughout the year for the programs and services we offer. There are also internships available for students who have an interest in recreation, fitness, business administration, and marketing. For those interested in internships, please contact the appropriate professional in the specific program area for more information.

Campus Recreation employs over 200 part-time student employees during the school year. We also have positions available for students in the work study program (must apply through the work study office here: http://www.clemson.edu/financial-aid/).

The Events & Scheduling Assistant is primarily responsible for handling all reservation requests and scheduling of Campus Recreation spaces within and around Fike Recreation Center and the Outdoor Fitness and Wellness Center. These students will additionally gain experience working with the planning, execution and operations of events within Campus Recreation facilities. Strong organizational and communication skills are required. Some level of event planning is preferred. 

The Club Sports Program offers student opportunities for employment through Club Sport Manager positions. They will provide on-site supervision to club sports activities, including practices and competitions. Club sports managers will act as first-responders to emergency situations and also serve as the liaison between the University and visiting club teams. They may also have an opportunity to assist with administrative work through office hours as well. Students with leadership or team experience are encouraged to apply!

Welcome Center employees are typically the first point of contact for Campus Recreation participants. Students at the Welcome Center are expected to have outstanding customer service skills, particularly in the area of communication. Answering telephones and responding professionally to emails are daily responsibilities. The Welcome Center handles all membership, locker and towel sales, as well as all registrations. Welcome Center Assistants must also monitor access to Fike Recreation Center.

The Fitness staff is made up of energetic and encouraging students who have a passion for leading others to establish and maintain healthy lifestyles.  Group fitness classes, personal training sessions, and fitness assessments are all led by trained and certified Clemson University students.  Clemson Fitness is always looking for enthusiastic students willing to take the next step in fitness leadership and who have the desire to learn life-long leadership and communication skills.

The Intramural Sports program serves over 5,000 Clemson students annually. All of our sports and events are led by student employees who work as managers and sports officials on a nightly basis. No previous experience is needed for students who wish to gain employment as a sports official. Training clinics are held throughout each semester to prepare you for a job in which you can gain practical skills such as working in a team setting, conflict management, and communication. We encourage any and everyone who is interested in officiating to take advantage of this leadership opportunity within our program. Click on the links below for detailed position descriptions.

Operations Assistants ensure the proper daily operations of all activities within Fike Recreation Center at Clemson University. The Operations Assistants are primarily responsible for monitoring all activities within Swann Fitness Center, ensuring safety and cleanliness of fitness equipment, recreation areas, and walkways throughout the facility. Operations Assistants also provide excellent customer service and enforce departmental policies. Operations Assistants must obtain lay responder level CPR, AED, and First-Aid certifications or higher within 30 days of hire. 

The Clemson Outdoor Recreation and Education (CORE) program have many great opportunities for to gain experience working in the field of outdoor recreation. CORE staff has two primary responsibilities: leading our outdoor adventure trips and managing our equipment rental program. Regardless of whether they are on the trail leading a trip or in the office renting out equipment, our staff is there to help people get outside and experience the outdoors in new and exciting ways. We are always looking for friendly and responsible students who are enthusiastic about sharing their passion for the outdoors and interested in gaining valuable experience through outdoor leadership opportunities.

Maintenance staff ensures that Fike Recreation Center and the Outdoor Fitness and Recreation Center are running safely and smoothly for our patrons. They report to the Maintenace Manager and will gain experience in maintenance and facility operations as well as how to maintain exercise equipment or maintain the natural and artificial turf fields. 

Climbing Wall Specialists are responsible for monitoring all activities at the Climbing Wall area within the Swann Fitness Center at Clemson University, ensuring safety, cleanliness, and organization of equipment, storage areas, and recreation area. Specialists provide excellent customer service, belay top rope climbers, and enforce facility policies. Additionally, there are opportunities for Climbing Wall Specialists to instruct belay certification clinics and assist with route setting. Climbing Wall Specialists must obtain lay responder level CPR, AED, and First-Aid certifications or higher within 30 days of hire. 

Lifeguards are responsible for monitoring all activities within the McHugh Natatorium at Clemson University, ensuring safety and cleanliness of aquatic equipment, seating areas, and pool deck. Lifeguards provide excellent customer service and enforce departmental policies. Additionally, there are opportunities for Lifeguards to instruct aqua group fitness classes. Lifeguards are required to hold a current Lifeguard certification that includes professional rescuer level CPR, AED, and First-Aid or higher.
