Assessment, Choices, Training and Transitions Program (ACTT)

The ACTT Program is a specialized program dedicated to the prevention, remediation and treatment of problems associated with the illegal or harmful use of alcohol and/or other drugs. The ACTT Program takes individual differences into account from the perspective of assisting the Clemson University student to make responsible choices. It validates the student’s right to choose and gain maturity while facing the positive or negative consequences of these choices.

Students can enter the program voluntarily or by being referred by a caring other or a judicial body. Emphasizing early identification of possible struggles, the ACTT Program offers students a clinical assessment including relevant questionnaires that, with student input, could generate recommendations for follow-up care. By honoring the student’s right to choose, follow-through with the recommendation will be up to the student (except under rare circumstances that might involve imminent danger to self or others).

In essence, the ACTT Program is a resource that equips students to understand oneself, understand risk factors and gain valuable education for responsible decision-making. Regardless of the student’s choice, he/she is expected to adhere to the students’ code of conduct, state and federal law, and act in a manner that brings honor to him/herself, family and Clemson University.

Access to the ACTT Program

A student can enter the program through the CUNow walk-in clinic, which operates on a first-come, first-served basis. During this initial visit, students undergo a brief session where the student’s concerns are heard and questionnaires are administered. A second follow-up session will complete the assessment process. During this latter session, a student has the opportunity to address his/her concerns more fully, explore strengths and weaknesses and be given feedback on the results of the questionnaires. Treatment recommendations might be made at that time.

Following through with recommendations made for treatment is strictly up to the student as well as accepting the consequences, either positive or negative, for that choice. CAPS will honor the student’s right to choose as we foster self-respect and responsible living.

Services through the ACTT Program are covered by the Student Health Fee and are at no cost to enrolled students who have paid this fee.

If a student is mandated to the ACTT Program and compliance verification is required, a Referral Form must be completed by the referring agency. The student will also need to complete the General Release of Information form. The student’s consent is necessary in order to notify the referral agency that the student completed (or did not complete) the assessment. Both forms must be downloaded and completed with original signatures and a copy given to the student to bring to CAPS when accessing services. At the time that the referral is made, the referral agency is to fax these two forms to 864-656-0760. A student must complete the initial contact within five working days from the time of the referral.

When a student is mandated to the program, completing the assessment will satisfy the mandate. If recommendations are made, these will not be disclosed to the referring agency as a matter of routine and will only be done with the student’s specific consent. The right of the student to confidentiality is honored. Students who are mandated to the program are charged a one-time $50 processing fee.
