At Clemson University, the Student Organizations and Clubs area of the Harvey and Lucinda Gantt Center for Student Life believes leadership is a relational process where individuals work together to make positive changes in their organizations and their community. We believe leadership can be taught and all students have the capacity to lead.

With us, you can:
  • Learn to lead in a student organization
  • Enroll in a leadership learning workshop
  • Participate in a leadership learning retreat
  • Request a facilitator to attend your organization’s meetings
  • Engage in a personalized leadership consultation with Center staff

Learn2Lead workshops are interactive 1 ½ hour sessions where participants explore, in-depth, various topics of leadership and management. For an organization to reach its vision, members will need both leadership and management knowledge, skills and values. Workshops are listed as either CORE or ELECTIVE. To maximize your learning experience, participating in all CORE workshops and at least four ELECTIVE workshops is recommended.

The following are leadership workshops. These workshops help students seek adaptive and constructive change, create an overall vision, build relationships and work successfully as a team, and understand the essential practices of effective leadership.

CORE

Reclaiming Leadership
Since the 1980s there have been over 600 different published definitions of leadership. So, if everything is leadership, then what is truly leadership?  This core Learn2Lead workshop seeks to reclaim what we mean when we use the term. We will look at the historical views of leadership and introduce a new paradigm of leadership thought. Participants will be challenged to think about their assumptions regarding leadership and to think critically about their personal leadership
philosophy as a way to inform their leadership behaviors.

ELECTIVE

Creating and working an organization’s mission, vision and goals
This workshop will help participants reconnect to the purpose of their organization. We will address the vision for what your organization hopes to adhere and the mission of how your organization will work to accomplish that vision.  Come learn how to think, reflect and create a vision and mission that will unite your group and help direct you toward successfully reaching your goals.

Emotionally Intelligent Leadership
Emotionally Intelligent Leadership blends two concepts, emotional intelligence and leadership in one model. This workshop will give students an opportunity to learn more about themselves, and better understand how to interact with and lead others.  Participants explore the three fundamental facets that contribute to leadership development under this model: consciousness of self, consciousness of others and consciousness of context. Part of the workshop will include completion of a leadership inventory aimed at identifying current leadership skills and areas for further improvement.

Ethical Leadership: The Challenge of Congruence
This workshop will address the following questions: What does ethics have to do with student organizations? What are the most salient ethical dilemmas facing student orgs?  What are the best practices around ethical decision making? What role do student organizations have in modeling ethical behavior on campus? Other discussion topics include organizational transparency, dealing with controversy, effective communication techniques and living your mission.

Finding Power and Opportunity in Conflict and Controversy
This workshop focuses on helping participants develop basic skills needed to foster collaborative relationships when conflict or controversy appears.  It will involve an exploration of what is conflict, the sources of conflict and strategies that will help students develop effective and empowering means of resolving conflict and controversy.

Leadership and Diversity
In this workshop participants discover the positive outcomes of creating a socially diverse organization. Specifically, students will be able to detail how unique racial, gender, socio-economic, spiritual, and sexual perspectives can enrich the vision of an organization and spur more effective and creative initiatives.
