Each year, students across the nation take The SAT, a college admissions test, that may play a pivotal role in their admission to a college or university. To help increase SAT scores among high school students in South Carolina, the Office of Academic Excellence coordinates The SAT Boot Camp with Kaplan Test Prep and Admissions to help students earn higher SAT scores.
Students Who Participate in The SAT Boot Camp Receive
▪ The Kaplan SAT course curriculum, including content review and test-taking strategies on all three sections of The SAT
▪ Course materials, including, Raise Your Score Even More handbook; Big Purple Book of Eight Practice SATs; The Official SAT Study Guide: For the New SAT; and math, vocabulary, and writing flashcards
▪ Three full-length proctored practice SAT exams with individual analysis and a study plan for each student during the two-week summer session
▪ Fall "brush up" sessions in Greenville, Columbia, and Charleston, which include two sessions in each location, one full-length proctored exam and a 2.5-hour review class
▪ Online assistance for each student which provides access to the Kaplan SAT QuizBank, lessons on demand, and supplemental workshops and quizzes
▪ Individual performance results for each student
A Work in Progress
Now in its ninth year, The SAT Boot Camp continues to target underrepresented students in higher education.
▪ More than 1,000 students have participated in the program
▪ In 2004, participants increased their SAT scores by an average of 150 points
▪ Nearly 100% of the participants qualify for the Legislative Incentive for Future Excellence (LIFE) scholarships at the end of the program
Admission
Approximately 300 students are nominated by their school each year. From this pool, a selection committee chooses students to participate in the program. Selected students are those whose PSAT scores and grade point averages predict success in a college preparation program. Applicants must:
▪ Be in the top 10 percent of their class
▪ Be enrolled in a 10th-grade college preparatory curriculum
▪ Complete the application process
▪ Have a verifiable PSAT or SAT score and a grade point average of 3.5 or higher in math, science, and English
▪ Have their high school guidance counselor send an official copy of their transcript to the Office of Academic Excellence
