Charles H. Houston Center
Faculty Development

The Faculty Development program is a professional development experience designed to provide a scholarly forum to discuss published research and data as well as the Charles H. Houston Center’s research findings that describe the current state of research and scholarship on issues impacting the recruitment and retention of African American and other underrepresented faculty in postsecondary settings.

The instructional activities that constitute the curriculum of the Faculty Development program consists of reviewing literature and analyzing data that focus on the Black faculty experience in higher education and providing a scholarly atmosphere by which to discuss the implications of this body of research on the personal and professional lives of African American and other underrepresented faculty. Additionally, the Faculty Development program encourages faculty to conduct research that is consistent with the vision and priorities of the Charles H. Houston Center. Accordingly, during the academic year, Faculty Development program participants are expected to conduct empirical research, pursue funding, and engage in service activities related to issues that are consistent with the mission and strategic goals of the Center.

The Faculty Development program also includes The Scholars Lecture Series, which enables academicians, administrators, and scholars to present topics of interest to Clemson University faculty including but not limited to: (a) producing high-quality scholarship, (b) earning tenure and promotion, and (c) contributing to the campus community.

In coordinating and designing the research-based curriculum for the Faculty Development program, the Charles H. Houston Center for the Study of the Black Experience in Education collaborates with the President's Commission on the Status of Black Faculty and Staff, the Office of Access and Equity, the President’s Council on Community and Diversity, and the Pan-African Studies Program.

Faculty Development program workshops take place once a month from September through April. To participate in the comprehensive scholarly activities that comprise the Faculty Development program, please complete the registration form.
