Home -> About Us History of the Outdoor Laboratory
In 1970, Clemson University faculty in the department of Recreation and Park Administration (now PRTM) were operating summer camps supported by the South Carolina Jaycees and the Electric City Sertoma Club of Anderson. At the time, Camp Hope and Camp Sertoma were held separately at Camp Long, a SC 4-H facility. As participants began to increase in number over the next few summers, Clemson University faculty and administration proposed a permanent home for the programs. The dream was to build an outdoor recreational facility to do two things -- serve Clemson University students as a laboratory for practical experience, and to provide meaningful camping experiences for individuals across the state with special needs. Today, the Clemson University Outdoor Lab has expanded its services to include a unique and top-notch retreat center. In addition to the summer camp operations, the Outdoor Lab hosts individuals from around the world who are seeking that one-of-a-kind location for conferences, retreats and lodging.
