Hans Klar has held a wide variety of teaching and educational leadership positions in Japan, Australia, Indonesia, and China. His research has primarily focused on ways in which urban high school principals foster department chair instructional leadership capacity as a strategy for school improvement and enhanced student achievement. Dr. Klar’s publications have centered on professional development, leadership development, and context-responsive leadership. His most recent publication is Fostering Distributed Instructional Leadership: A Sociocultural Perspective of Leadership Development in Urban High Schools, published in Leadership and Policy in Schools.

Dr. Klar is also the principal investigator of the South Carolina Successful School Principals' Project (SCSSPP). The SCSSPP is a study of successful school leadership in high-poverty schools across South Carolina, and is connected to the International Successful School Principals' Project.
