Welcome to the Clemson University Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management website! The Department's mission: The department will be known and respected for the quality and distinctiveness of its unique educational, research, and public service programs which enhance our vision of serving people and caring for our natural resources. This is accomplished through a multifaceted approach to our endeavors. The fulfillment of this mission rests with innovative faculty who function cooperatively in accomplishing visionary programs to maintain our leadership as we move into the 21st century.

I am very pleased to present a few of the many things that are going on in our busy academic department. Our faculty, staff and students are engaged in a variety of endeavors that make it nearly impossible to list them all – from our innovative curriculum and five concentration areas in our undergraduate degree program to our internationally recognized graduate program – from our work in the South Carolina Low Country to projects in Africa, Europe and the Caribbean – from our Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Clemson University to the Outdoor Lab – from our work with child development to research in Glacier National Park – there is a lot going on.

Please explore all we have to offer. If you cannot find something or someone, or if you have a question that we can help answer, please take the time to contact us. Hospitality is more than a buzzword at Clemson; it is something we practice. And, since this website is an extension of what we would offer you in person, please know that your visit is always welcome!

Clemson University's Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management Program is accredited by the Council on Accreditation for Parks, Recreation, Tourism, and Related Professions (COAPRT). COAPRT accredits baccalaureate programs in parks, recreation, tourism, sport management, event management, therapeutic recreation, and leisure studies offered at regionally accredited institutions within the United States and its territories, and at nationally accredited institutions in Canada and Mexico. COAPRT is, in turn, accredited by the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).

Be Aware of Degree and Accreditation Mills

CHEA requires accredited institutions to inform the public about “degree and accreditation mills.”  Cautions concerning these are summarized in a video that can be viewed at  According to CHEA,

Degree mills and accreditation mills mislead and harm.  In the United States, degrees and certificates from mills may not be acknowledged by other institutions when students seek to transfer or go to graduate school.  Employers may not acknowledge degrees and certificates from degree mills when providing tuition assistance for continuing education.  “Accreditation” from an accreditation mill can mislead students and the public about the quality of an institution.  In the presence of degree mills and accreditation mills, students may spend a good deal of money and receive neither an education nor a useable credential.
