Tobacco Pest Management Scouting Manual

The Tobacco Pest Management Scouting Manual (EB 129) was first printed in 1984. Although it was reprinted in 1988, no revisions were made at that time. By 2000, in addition to the stock being low, it was badly out of date and in need of revision. The objective of this proposal was to revise and reprint this bulletin.
The bulletin was revised extensively by the authors between October 2000 and April 2001. Major additions were sections on tomato spotted wilt virus and thrips, its vector. Tomato spotted wilt virus was unknown to tobacco in South Carolina at the time the bulletin was first written. The rough draft was submitted to Clemson's Media Relations and Publishing Department in April 2001. After numerous changes and revisions, the final draft was submitted for publication in August 2001. The final product was delivered near the end of September 2001.
The new bulletins will be discussed and distributed to county extension agents working with tobacco at the Tobacco In-service Training to be held at the Pee Dee Research and Education Center on November 6, 2001. They will also be discussed and made available to growers at the two State Tobacco and Greenhouse Meetings to be held in Scranton on November 8 and in Conway on November 9, 2001. It is hoped that these discussions will spark interest in having more extensive tobacco scouting schools in tobacco counties during the spring of 2002.
