This IPM project compared pest populations on three different cotton genotypes: conventional (non Bt), Bollgard I (one Bt gene), and Bollgard II (two Bt genes). Bollgard I has been commercially available for several years; Bollgard II should be available in 2003. Replicated studies were set up in four locations, one in each of the following counties - Barnwell, Bamberg, Hampton, and Jasper. Three of these were located on grower farms with one at the Edisto REC; three were irrigated and one was dryland.
The main objective was to determine the number of insecticide applications necessary to control insect pests on the three genotypes. These plots were scouted weekly and applications were made to each respective genotype as necessary. Yields were determined by picking plots with a two-row cotton picker.
With cotton bollworm, our major lepidopterous pest, conventional cotton received the most applications (2-4), followed by Bollgard I (0-1) and Bollgard II with none. Bollgard II plots were treated 1 time for piercing/sucking bugs, primarily stink bugs. Differences in yields were not found among the three genotypes when each was treated according to established thresholds.
All funds were expended on summer labor hired to take weekly insect counts in the four locations.
