Research Interest:

Community-wide efforts to prevent child maltreatment locally, state-wide, and globally.

Influences and Responsibilities:

Dr. Melton has led the development of a unique interdisciplinary Ph.D. program at Clemson University in International Family and Community Studies in collaboration with universities in the Czech Republic, the Dominican Republic, Estonia, India, South Africa, Spain, and Thailand. He was also the Principal Architect of the U.S. Advisory Board on Child Abuse and Neglect’s neighborhood-based strategy for child protection.

He provides testimony and expert advice to US courts and lawmakers regarding juvenile protection and international consultation and lecturer on the matter of child maltreatment prevention. Dr. Melton is an editor and contributor to professional journals and textbooks and advisor to the S.C. State Board of Directors of Parents Anonymous. Dr. Melton serves as consultant and expert lecturer, in addition to holding offices, with various youth/family advisory boards at the local, state, national, and international levels.

Dr. Melton has authored approximately 300 publications, with works cited by all levels of U.S. courts and has received distinguished contribution awards for public service from the American Psychological Association. He is producer and frequent host of the weekly segment “Community Matters” on Clemson University’s Your Day radio program.
