Innovative center develops flexible packaging

Flexible, pouch-style packaging is gaining popularity with industry and consumers, and Clemson University plays an important role in this fast-growing industry. Clemson’s packaging science department is working with industry leaders to operate the one-of-a-kind Center for Flexible Packaging.

The center teaches students new technologies, conducts research to develop advanced packaging materials and processes, and provides services to industry, including training, equipment demonstrations, preparation of films, thermal processing and package evaluation.

“The department has been instrumental in supporting several new South Carolina businesses using shelf-stable packaging,” said Robert Kimmel, center director. In addition to food applications, flexible packaging is also used for pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and consumer and industrial products.
