State 4-H horse team wins regional awards
The South Carolina 4-H horse team came home with awards in 23 categories from the Southern Regional competition held this fall in Little Rock, Ark.
The annual event brings together teams from 13 states to test their knowledge about horses and horse judging, compete in speeches and demonstrations, and exhibit their horses.
“The South Carolina 4-H Horse team made our state proud,” said Ashley Hinson, Clemson 4-H agent who went with the team. “The competition was tough, but not too tough for our 4-Her's. They worked hard to prepare for both the educational contests and horse show.”
There were 23 members from 10 counties on the state team. Team members were selected based on their performance at the state contests held earlier this year. Clemson will host the regional event in 2010.
“The team won eight awards in regional championship, including two first place awards and second place overall in educational contests,” said Kristine Vernon, state 4-H horse program leader.
First place for an individual went to Ted Steele from Chester for his performance in Horse Bowl, a contest where participants answer questions on horse-related topics. First place also went to Josie Burden from Ninety-Six, Kristin Hinson from Lancaster, Amelia Nobles from Ridgeville and Rose O’Connor from Sumter for the Performance Division of the Horse Judging Contest.
