SC NPIP Additional Requirements for Avian Influenza Clean Breeding Flocks & Hatcheries
Participants must do the following to maintain U.S. Avian Influenza (AI) Clean status:
- Following all the requirements for U.S. Pullorum-Typhoid Clean status.
- The breeding stock, replacement breeders and birds used as “setters” (up to 30 birds) must be Avian Influenza tested negative every 6 months. Each bird tested shall be identified with a SC NPIP/PIA sealed and numbered band.
- New birds added to the farm (breeding or miscellaneous) must come from another NPIP AI Clean flock or each bird must be tested Avian Influenza negative before adding to the flock if they are not coming from an NPIP AI Clean flock.
- Avian influenza testing can either be done by a laboratory blood (serum) test or by a laboratory PCR test from tracheal/oropharyngeal swabs. There is not an on-site test for avian influenza. North Carolina specifically requires that the PCR avian influenza test be performed for poultry entering NC, as well as the Pullorum-Typhoid test.
