About the Department

The Department of Genetics and Biochemistry boasts a talented group of faculty members who are recognized both nationally and internationally as respected leaders in their fields. Genetics and biochemistry are keys to understanding the natural world. Students in the department partner with distinguished educators to use these keys to solve complex challenges and work with all types of organisms, from microbes to plants and humans.

Headshot of man, David Clayton.The Department of Genetics and Biochemistry is dedicated to Clemson’s overall mission of discovery, learning and engagement. Genetics and biochemistry are keys to understanding the natural world. As tools, they help us confront complex challenges including genetic disorders, fighting pathogens, and improving crops and optimizing drug development.

For undergraduates, we offer a rich and challenging curriculum that leads to the Bachelor of Science degree in genetics or in biochemistry. We are also now expanding our provisions for the Master of Science degree for students seeking further career-focused training and experience. Faculty members bring the most-current research findings to their courses, and rigorous laboratory components connect theories with hands-on practice. Many of our students go on to pursue advanced degrees at top medical, professional or graduate schools around the country and the world.

Our graduate programs lead to the Ph.D. in genetics or in biochemistry and molecular biology. In the first year students pursue coursework and rotate through different laboratories to identify home labs for their multi-year doctoral research projects. Opportunities are also available to develop experience in teaching. Faculty and students engage in research with model systems that include microbes, plants, animals and cultured human cells. Our techniques include advanced DNA/RNA sequencing, protein biochemistry, high-resolution light imaging, bioinformatics and systems biology. Laboratories are housed in the Life Sciences Facility; the Biosystems Research Complex , which includes access to an extensive greenhouse complex; and Self Regional Hall in Greenwood, South Carolina, which houses the Clemson Center for Human Genetics.
