Learning Opportunities with PSA Centers, Institutes and Extension Service
The Conestee Foundation in Greenville is hosting a large cleanup event of Lake Conestee and the surrounding forest. They are hoping to recruit 200 volunteers to remove over 200 tons of trash in the park. Lake Conestee was created in the early 1800's through damming of the Reedy River. The lake was severely polluted during the Industrial Revolution, and was left unused for many years to slowly recover. The 145 acre lake is now approximately 90% silted in, and contains a beautiful bottomland forest. The Conestee Foundation was started in 2000 to monitor and help recover the lake, and to turn the land into a nature park and environmental education complex. With the help of several generous grants and partnerships with the City and County of Greenville, the Conestee Foundation currently owns over 300 acres of land with 2.2 miles of trails and boardwalks and an observation deck overlooking beaver dams. The Foundation is continuing to work with a group of stakeholders to expand the park to 600-800 acres, and make it the southern hub of the developing Reedy River Greenway. This cleanup event will be a great opportunity to share the story of Lake Conestee, promote watershed stewardship, and bring together many local volunteer groups and student organizations. A flyer for the event is attached Additional information about the event can be found at<http://www.saludareedy.org/conestee.html www.saludareedy.org/conestee.html.
