Message from the Chair

Dr. William R. Marcotte JrI am pleased to welcome you to the Department of Genetics & Biochemistry at Clemson University. Our faculty have teaching and research expertise in areas ranging from molecular, developmental, and population genetics to microbial, plant, and protein biochemistry to genomics and bioinformatics.

We offer rich and challenging curricula that lead to the Bachelor of Science degree in Genetics and in Biochemistry. Faculty members bring the most current research findings to their courses for a state-of-the-art educational experience and the associated rigorous laboratory components connect theories with reality. Our students graduate ready to enter the workforce in academia, industry or government and/or to pursue advanced degrees in medical or professional schools. The success of our programs is evidenced by acceptance of our bachelors graduates into top graduate programs (e.g., Vanderbilt, Virginia, Duke, Oxford, MD Anderson) and professional/medical schools (e.g., Johns Hopkins, Washington University, Emory, North Carolina).

Our graduate programs lead to the Doctor of Philosophy in Genetics or in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. In addition to a set of required core courses and other specialized course offerings, the Department utilizes a laboratory rotation system to assist students in identification of a home laboratory for their doctoral research projects. Our Ph.D. graduates are successful in securing sought-after postdoctoral positions at schools like Yale, Wisconsin-Madison, Cold Spring Harbor Labs and the Noble Foundation and subsequently transitioning to tenure-track faculty positions. Postdoctoral scholars participate in the training of graduate students and submit their own research proposals as they develop their own careers as independent investigators.

Faculty and research laboratories are housed in the new Life Sciences Facility, the Biosystems Research Complex (BRC), that includes access to an extensive greenhouse complex, and the Greenwood Genetic Center.  All these facilities include state-of-the-art equipment that, when coupled with extensive private, state and federal funding, allow our students to contribute to the advancement of knowledge through novel research.
