The MAT (Master of Arts in Teaching) in middle level education is a 36-hour field-based initial certification program for grades 5-8. Course work includes 12 content area hours and 24 hours in education in the areas of middle school methods, curriculum, reading, educational psychology, growth and development, tests and measures, and special education.

Admissions are run through the program coordinator. All potential MAT students must have their undergraduate transcripts (and any graduate work that may be relevant to admission) evaluated by the coordinator. This will determine if the potential student should apply for admission. An interview is also required. In most cases this should be scheduled for Greenville, but out-of-state students may set up a phone interview.
The MAT uses the Praxis II content exams rather than the GRE for admissions purposes.
Because the exam is only given six times a year, some latitude is given to candidates. Students may be conditionally accepted based on the transcript review and interview alone. This saves them a spot in their cohort. Students must file all passing Praxis II and PLT scores with the coordinator.
