Kelly Nalley, Fork Shoals School Spanish Teacher, Named South Carolina Teacher of the Year. Nalley graduated with a bachelors degree in secondary education from Clemson's School of Education. Read more in the Greenville County Schools' release.

Cawthon named ACPA Foundation 2011 Class of Diamond Honorees

Tony Cawthon, Chair of Leadership, Counselor Education, and Human and Organizational Development and Professor in student affairs, has been recognized by ACPA (College student Education International) as a 2011 Class of Diamond honoree. The Diamond Honoree Program, established by the Foundation in 1999, is both a recognition program and a fundraiser. Founded in 1994 during the presidency of Charles Schroeder, the purpose of the ACPA Educational Leadership Foundation (501c3 non-profit organization) is "to enhance the student affairs profession and to generate and disseminate knowledge of college students at all levels within higher education" (Article Three of the Articles of Incorporation).


In August 2010, Schraldi earned a degree. This time it was her Bachelor of Science degree from Clemson's School of Nursing. Schraldi is currently employed as an RN at Greenville Hospital University Medical Center.

One of a Kind RN

The year was 1967. Thurgood Marshall was sworn into the Supreme Court. That same year, Cindy Schraldi graduated with an Associate Degree in Nursing. Like Marshall, Schraldi was a first. She, along with the rest of her cohort, were the premier graduates of Clemson University earning a degree in nursing. Fast forward 43 years. In August 2010, Schraldi earned a degree. This time it was her Bachelor of Science degree from Clemson's School of Nursing. Schraldi is currently employed as an RN with Greenville Hospital Systems University Medical Center, Hillcrest

Drs. Eckhoff and Quigley Named Service Alliance Faculty Fellows for 2010-2011

Dr. Angela Eckhoff, assistant professor in early childhood and Dr. Cassie Quigley, assistant professor in the middle grades program were two of seven University faculty named Clemson University Service Alliance Faculty Fellows for 2010-2011. The Fellows Program is a program for faculty interested in exploring issues related to service-learning and community-based research. These faculty members receive a $1,200 in professional development funds to conduct faculty workshops on service-learning and community-based research through the Office of Teaching Effectiveness and Innovation, and will also serve as a resource for other faculty interested in utilizing service-learning in their classroom or developing a community-based research design.

Curtis A. Brewer, faculty member of educational leadership, has been accepted as a 2010-11 class of the South Carolina Education Policy Fellowship Program (EPFP). The program is a state-based program coordinated by the Institute for Education Leadership (IEL) in Washington, DC and is given a national dimension through national meetings, a network of over 6000 fellows, and IEL's broad policy and program connections in many sectors at all governance levels across the country. The class will engage in in-depth discussion of policy development and current issues on the local, state and federal level as they work together and grow professionally and personally.

April Thomas, mathematics education student, was selected to receive the $5,000 AFCEA STEM Teachers Scholarship this 2010-11 year on behalf of the AFCEA Educational Foundation.


Sarah Griffin, MPH, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Public Health Sciences has been selected as a Clemson University Service Alliance Faculty Fellow for 2010-2011.

Public Health's Griffin Selected as Clemson Service Alliance Faculty Fellow

Sarah Griffin, MPH, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Public Health Sciences has been selected as a Clemson University Service Alliance Faculty Fellow for 2010-2011. She is one of 7 Clemson University faculty selected for this award.

As a Service Alliance Fellow, Griffin is entitled to receive a $1200 stipend in the form of professional development monies in return for:

  1. Teaching at least one course utilizing service-learning or community based research during 2008-09.
  2. Conducting a 90 minute service-learning workshop or  participating in a roundtable or panel discussion for the Office of Teaching Effectiveness and Innovation either in the Fall or Spring Semesters.  
  3. Serve as a consultant and mentor to faculty  in designing and revising courses to include service-learning components.
  4. Assist with student learning assessment and program evaluation involving both campus and community partners.
  5. Write an article for the campus service-learning publication.

Professional Development funds are state funds and must follow all state guidelines with respect to purchases. The funds are  to be used for conference travel to make presentations and for supplies needed for service-learning classes.

In addition, the Service Alliance Fellows meet as a group once during the fall and spring semesters to assist with planning/ goal development for future programs offered by the Service Alliance.
