Flue-cured tobacco production in South Carolina totaled 49.5 million pounds in 2007 and was produced on 22,000 acres. This was approximately 4% of the total agricultural income for 2006 or about 14% of the row income for South Carolina. Tobacco was second greatest for any row crop income. The 2004 Tobacco Buyout has drastically changed the tobacco landscape in the United States, but tobacco will still play an important role in South Carolina agriculture in the near future. Tobacco is produced primarily in 14 Pee Dee counties located in the northeastern part of the South Carolina.

The Pee Dee Research and Education Center, located near Florence, SC, is the base of much or the tobacco research and public service work done by Clemson University. Research and education efforts are focused primarily on efficient, cost effective, and environmentally sound production, management and curing practices as well as greenhouse production of tobacco transplants. Producers must be sustained in the face of a drastically changed post-buyout environment that includes changing technologies, a narrowing economic base, demanding environment concerns as well as social issue changes. In the foreseeable future, tobacco will remain a prominent component of South Carolina as well as worldwide agriculture.

The Clemson University Cooperative Extension Service offers its programs to people of all ages, regardless of race, color, sex, religion,
