History, Mission & Vision

History

Grant Support Services (GSS) at Clemson University was officially established on July 1, 2002. Dr. John Kelly, Vice President for PSA, created the department in an effort to mitigate unprecedented budget cuts. Dr. Kelly delegated oversight of the department to Dr. Neil Ogg, Associate Vice President for PSA.

GSS is a decentralized, service-oriented clearinghouse for external proposal submissions for Public Service Activities (PSA) and the College of Agriculture, Forestry, and Life Sciences (CAFLS) at Clemson University. GSS is responsible for assisting principal investigators in proposal preparation, funding source identification, budget preparation, editing, and all other areas of pre-award administration, with the exception of contract negotiation.

Grant Support Services is authorized under the auspices of Clemson University’s Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) to approve the submission of proposals requesting less than $500,000.00 that include faculty from CAFLS, PSA, the Clemson University Cooperative Extension Service, and the College of Engineering & Science (CoES). GSS is authorized to send proposals requesting less than $500,000.00 directly to the sponsor for OSP. For proposals over $500,000.00, GSS will process the proposal as usual and send it to OSP for submission. Using this system, the principal investigator gets the same careful attention and service for each proposal submitted.

Mission

Our mission is to provide exemplary pre-award service to all of PSA and CAFLS through expediting and assisting in: seeking funding opportunities, proposal formatting, budget development, and guideline and policy correctness and consistency. We are committed to providing service to all constituents by building relationships with the people we serve, being responsive to their needs, and being proactive in our methodology.

Vision

Grant Support Services will become a fully integrated support function for PSA and CAFLS research initiatives. The department will offer reference materials, assist in proposal development, facilitate training for new and current principal investigators, perform accounting operations and compliance services for individual grants, and other pertinent duties related to grant administration. We will continue to operate in a culture that promotes honesty, integrity, fairness, and exemplary professional conduct. Further, we will encourage employees to develop expertise through training and experience to ensure that end-users obtain excellent services with practical results.
