Message from Dean Esin Gulari

Engineering and science have been an integral part of Clemson since it was founded in 1889 as a “high seminary of learning to benefit the agricultural and mechanical arts.” Today, the College of Engineering and Science attracts some of the nation’s best scholars and students through innovative teaching, cutting-edge research and community service.
The college has earned national recognition for its success in recruiting and maintaining a diverse and academically gifted student body. For example, students accepted into the College of Engineering and Science have an average combined score of over 1265 on the SAT, and more than half of freshman participants in the Calhoun Honors College are enrolled in the College of Engineering and Science. In addition, the college’s retention rates are among the highest in the nation.
Clemson’s engineering and science faculty are recognized and respected in both academic and professional circles. The vast majority of professors hold doctorates or postdoctorates from top institutions, many serve in leadership positions in professional societies, and virtually all are published or involved in funded research. Without exception, however, their main emphasis is on teaching — sharing their love and excitement for their subjects with students.
One thing that sets Clemson apart is its recognition that preparing students for successful careers means providing much more than specialized technical knowledge. Engineers and scientists must also understand the social and business implications of their work. They must be able to communicate their ideas to a range of people. They must be able to work effectively in teams. Above all, they must be willing and able to provide leadership in solving society’s problems.
In the College of Engineering and Science, development of communication skills is an integral part of all classes, and the emphasis on teamwork and collaboration begins in the freshman year. Students learn to solve real-world problems, often providing valuable solutions for industrial partners while dealing with economic, ethical and environmental issues in the process.
