What is it?
Take a close look at just about any scientific field, and you’ll find that chemistry is involved in some part of the process. Elements, compounds, molecules and atoms react, creating advanced materials with amazing properties. One of the oldest and largest departments on campus, Clemson’s chemistry program prepares students for careers in medicine, pharmacy, law, biotechnology, education, research and many other industries.
What will I study?
Clemson’s chemistry program offers B.S. and B.A. degrees. The B.S. is approved by the American Chemical Society and emphasizes technical and communication skills needed to excel in a career in chemistry. The B.A. provides a broader education and is an excellent preprofessional curriculum for medicine, pharmacy and law. Both programs include research opportunities and curricula that allow for specialization.
Where is my future with a chemistry degree?
Recent graduates have found positions at companies such as Sun Chemical, Merck, Pfizer, Continental Tire, the EPA, Pharmaceutical Associates and Michelin. Those pursuing graduate degrees attend institutions such as Berkeley, UT-Austin, Scripps Research Institute, Duke, Purdue, Georgia Tech, Emory Medical School and the Dental School of UNC.
What type of facilities will I use for research?
The chemistry department has 48 faculty members and is headquartered in the Howard L. Hunter Chemistry Laboratory. The building provides more than 50,000 square feet of lab space for research and teaching. Other labs, institutes and centers are located both on campus and around the Upstate of South Carolina.
