Angus 1st-Calf Heifer Development

Dr. Larry W. Olson - Associate Professor, Extension Animal Scientist - Principal Investigator

Rebecca H. Davis - IRM Beef Production Systems Technician

The Angus 1st-Calf Heifer Development Program is the second year of a 2-year management program. It begins September 1st with a group of highly selected pregnant yearling Angus heifers and lasts through their first calving season until their first calves are weaned. This program is designed to provide heifers the opportunity the fully develop their genetic potential for growth and productivity. Detailed production and economic analyses of the cost of producing replacement heifers are conducted.

After a heifer calves, she is moved to winter grazing of ryegrass. The 56-day breeding season consists of a 21-day estrus synchronized AI season followed by a 35-day natural breeding season. During the summer, they graze hybrid pearl millet pasture. After their first calves have been weaned, pregnant coming 3-year-olds are transferred to the Angus Cow-Calf Production component.
