Angus Cow-Calf Production

Dr. Larry W. Olson - Associate Professor, Extension Animal Scientist - Principal Investigator

Rebecca H. Davis - IRM Beef Production Systems Technician

The Angus Cow-Calf Production component herd of mature registered Angus cows raising Angus calves is the base herd for creating and maintaining all other component herds of the IRM Beef Production Systems programThe effectiveness of using expected progeny differences (EPD's) in sire selection and high accuracy, proven AI sires for genetic improvement in cow-calf production will be evaluated with this herd.  EPD's for the cows and herd bulls are computed by the American Angus Association National Cattle Evaluation program.  The foundation for this herd was created with donations of registered Angus females and embryos from Angus breeders in South Carolina and across the country.

Coastal bermudagrass-bahiagrass-crabgrass mixed pastures are overseeded in the fall with ryegrass for winter grazing after cows calve.  Stockpiled MaxQ fescue will be grazed in the fall and winter.  The MaxQ fescue will also stretch the spring grazing window, especially during the 56-day breeding season from April 5 thru May 31 -- 21-days of estrus synchronized AI breeding followed by 35 days of natural breeding.  Cows calve in a 56-day calving season from January 13 - March 10.  Replacement Angus cows for this herd are pregnant, coming 3-year-olds completing the Angus 1st-Calf Heifer Development component
