The Preconditioning Program component is at least a 45-day nutrition and herd health management program to minimize weaning stress, health problems and death losses. Key to this program is the ability to get all calves on medicated feed within 4-days after weaning. It is the first step in a good replacement heifer development program. Feedlots recommend at least a 45-day preconditioning program and pay a premium for truckload lots of preconditioned calves.  Preconditioning is a profitable way to add both weight and value per pound to feeder calves.
