Crossbred 1 Cow-Calf ProductionDr. Larry W. Olson - Associate Professor, Extension Animal Scientist - Principal Investigator Rebecca H. Davis - IRM Beef Production Systems Technician The Crossbred 1 Cow-Calf Production component produces Charolais-Angus, Gelbvieh-Angus, Hereford-Angus and Simmental-Angus steers and heifers. After weaning then the Preconditioning Program, the crossbred steers will be shipped to a western feedlot to gather feedlot performance and carcass merit data. The crossbred heifers go into the Crossbred 2 Yearling Heifer Development then to the Crossbred 2 1st-Calf Heifer Development and then to the Crossbred 2 Cow-Calf Production component. Cows will calve in a 61-day calving season of January 9 - March 10. The 61-day breeding season runs from April 1 - May 31 -- 30-days synchronized AI breeding then 31-days natural breeding. All open cows are culled and sold at weaning. Replacement females are bred, coming 3-year-olds from the Angus 1st-Calf Heifer Development component. Coastal bermudagrass-bahiagrass-crabgrass mixed pastures are overseeded in the fall with ryegrass for winter grazing after cows calve. Stockpiled MaxQ and Kentucky-31 fescue will be grazed in the fall and winter. The MaxQ and Kentucky-31fescue will also stretch the spring grazing window, especially during the 61-day breeding season from April 1 - May 31 -- 30-days synchronized AI breeding then 31-days natural breeding. Cows calve in a 61-day calving season from January 9 - March 10.
