Crossbred 2 Cow-Calf ProductionDr. Larry W. Olson - Associate Professor, Extension Animal Scientist - Principal Investigator Rebecca H. Davis - IRM Beef Production Systems Technician The Crossbred 2 Cow-Calf Production component evaluates the production of Charolais-Angus, Gelbvieh-Angus, Hereford-Angus and Simmental-Angus cows. After weaning and the Preconditioning Program, the crossbred steers will be shipped to a feedlot to obtain feedlot performance and carcass merit data. The crossbred heifers will be marketed as crossbred replacement heifers. Cows will calve in a 56-day calving season of January 13 - March 10. The 56-day natural breeding season using Angus bulls runs from April 5 - May 31. Open cows are culled and sold at weaning. Replacement females are bred, coming 3-year-olds from the Crossbred 2 1st-Calf Heifer Development component. Coastal bermudagrass-bahiagrass-crabgrass mixed pastures are overseeded in the fall with ryegrass for winter grazing after cows calve. Stockpiled MaxQ and Kentucky-31 fescue will be grazed in the fall and winter. The MaxQ and Kentucky-31 fescue will also stretch the spring grazing window.
