Field Experience

Student with teacher

The Eugene T. Moore School of Education believes that high quality field and internship experiences are essential to program success. Field experiences and internships provide our candidates with diverse, real world experiences in their major fields of study. We believe our graduates depart Clemson with the knowledge and experience to be highly effective practitioners and leaders in the education profession.

Bill Millar — Coordinator of Office of Field Experiences — coordinates field placements and internships for initial certification teacher candidates. Amy Milsom coordinates placements for school counseling and clinical mental health counseling students, and Tony Cawthon coordinates field experiences for student affairs counseling students.

Field experiences in educational leadership take place at the masters, specialist and doctoral level. Field experiences for M.Ed. students are coordinated by the instructor through EDL 750, 751, 755, and 756. Doctoral students in the P-12 and higher education concentrations must complete a research-based field experience (in EDL 986) in which they work with professors to develop research skills in a chosen area of specialization, resulting in the completion of a conference proposal submission or a manuscript submission for publication.

Counselor Education

Counselor Education students in clinical mental health counseling, school counseling, and student affairs complete both practicum and internship experiences during their course of study. The practicum is designed to help students develop requisite counseling skills and knowledge of the applied setting. The internship provides students with experience in all aspects of professional functioning applicable to their program track. The Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) standards are the guidelines for use in implementing field experience requirements. Student affairs majors, please refer to the Student Affairs Field Experience Handbook.

Requirements for practicum and internship are specific to the program of study. Students are required to attend a field experience orientation meeting during the first semester of enrollment and will receive notice of this meeting by Clemson student e-mail.
