Masters of Education — Teaching and Learning

Overview

The purpose of the M.Ed. Program in Teaching and Learning is to provide advanced education and experiences for certified teachers in the state of South Carolina, and beyond. The program is open to qualified individuals with teacher certification in local and regional communities. The objectives of the M.Ed. program in Teaching and Learning are to:

  1. enhance the practice of certified teachers;
  2. provide a source for the development of highly qualified teachers for South Carolina; and
  3. provide a rigorous program of study grounded in current research.

The specialty content areas served by the Teaching and Learning program include Mathematics Education, Science Education, English Education, Social Studies Education, and Elementary Education.

Admission Requirements

  • Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution
  • Admission to the Clemson Graduate School
  • Meet all requirements of the Graduate School
  • Unofficial transcripts (Official transcripts will be required if recommended for admission).
  • Copy of valid teaching certificate
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Competitive GRE scores

*It is anticipated that applications for this new program will be received beginning in December, 2010.

The Teaching and Learning program requires a minimum of 30 credit hours (33 for those who have not successfully completed an undergraduate content reading course) in graduate courses with a grade-point ratio of 3.0 or higher, of which at least 18 hours must be from courses at the 700 level or above. The M.Ed. program is composed of two elements:

  1. Core pedagogical course work (18 hours)
  2. Elective courses (12 hours)

  1. EDF 877 Experimental and Non-experimental Research Methods in Education I
  2. EDEL 760/EDSEC 765 Curriculum Theory and Development
  3. EDF 802 Advanced Educational Psychology
  4. EDF 871 Equity Issues in United States Public Schools
  5. ED 860 Classroom Action Research
  6. EDF 808 Educational Tests and Measurements

*Students who have not successfully completed an undergraduate content reading course must, in addition, take READ 864.

Elective Courses - 12 hours
Subject-Specific Electives:

  1. Subject-specific electives must be chosen in conjunction with the major adviser. Specialty graduate course work should be related to one of the following emphasis areas: mathematics education, science education, English education, social studies education and elementary education.

General Electives: General electives must be chosen in conjunction with the major adviser. Courses should be selected with the candidate’s professional goals in mind.
