The Clemson University Parks, Recreation & Tourism Management Student Association (PRTMSA) is dedicated to providing educational and networking opportunities for its students. The Student Association put on numerous activities for the students to enrich their experiences within the department.
Each year the PRTMSA partners with the South Carolina Recreation and Parks Association to volunteer at their annual conference. The PRTMSA take students to the conference where the students are responsible for helping with registration, being room hosts at sessions, and helping with evening activities. This conference gives the students the opportunity to meet and network with some of the statewide recreation providers and discuss the possibilities of internships.
Many of the same agency representatives attending the conference also attend the PRTMSA annual Intern Career Fair for all PRTM students. This internship Fair put on by the Student Association provides an opportunity for the students to meet with professionals and discuss internship possibilities. Between 20 and 30 representatives from 20 different agencies register for this event. The evening before the Internship Fair, the Student Sssociation hosts a barbeque/dinner to increase networking opportunities between the students and the agencies represented. This provides a more relaxed atmosphere for all interested students to get to know the professionals.
One other educational opportunity the Student Association provided for its students is a professional certification meeting. This meeting was a time for professionals in various areas of recreational related fields to come in and discuss available certifications with the students. Represented at this meeting are professionals from therapeutic recreation, community recreation, festivals and events, and travel and tourism.
The Student Association also provids many opportunities for the students to get to know the faculty and other students within the department. Some fun opportunities put on by the Student Association are baseball tailgate, a student vs. faculty bowling tournament, and also a student vs. faculty kickball tournament. The student association raises money toward these by selling Parks, Recreation & Tourism Management T-shirts and Valentine's Day cookie sale fundraiser to name a few.
After, Hurricane Katrina, in conjunction with the PRTM program planning classes, the Student Association helped raise $1800 for Katrina relief efforts. The money was sent to a small park district in Mississippi that was devastated by the storm.
