Faculty Overview
Dr. Castle’s major teaching and research interests are in the geological and environmental aspects of energy resources. He teaches courses in sedimentology, structural geology, and aquifer characterization.

His current research activities focus on environmental aspects of sediments in terms of physical, chemical, and biological processes. He investigates constructed wetland systems for treating impaired waters for beneficial reuse, including produced waters from oil and gas operations and scrubber waters from coal-burning power plants. His research includes applying results from studies of modern natural and experimental systems to understanding processes operating on the scale of geologic time, especially processes related to past and future changes in global climate. His other recent research activities focus on unconventional hydrocarbon resources (heavy oil, gas shales, and tight gas), reservoir characterization, and natural gas storage.
