Advancement is uniquely organized to effectively and efficiently accomplish its mission. As a university division, it assumes its place in the traditional university organization chart. However, the scope of Advancement expands to numerous related organizations organized under separate, but related, boards with different reporting structures.
The Vice President for Advancement is responsible for raising annual, capital and planned gifts to support Clemson University; serving constituents of Clemson University; seeking service, participation, counsel and ambassadorship from constituents; managing constituent database; managing private assets of Clemson University; facilitating institutional communication internally and externally; establishing and maintaining strong relations with print and electronic media and general public; producing quality publications for Clemson University; and generally building and enhancing the image of Clemson University. The Vice President has jurisdiction over Conference, Guest and Visitor programs.
Brian O'Rourke, Director of Development and Alumni Affairs
As director of development and alumni affairs, the director oversees and ensures close collaboration of Clemson's alumni relations and fund-raising programs. This includes supervising alumni relations; all aspects of fund raising, including annual giving, major gifts, planned giving, corporate and foundation support, college initiatives and academic and athletic capital campaigns; donor prospect research and development; and donor relations, stewardship and events.
Wil, a member of the Class of 2000, holds a bachelor’s degree in history. While at Clemson, Wil was president of his fraternity, a member of Student Alumni Council and student body president. After graduation, Wil served the Greenville Clemson Club as president. Under his leadership, the club was the first to make gifts to both the Palmetto Challenge and the WestZone. In 2005, he was named the Alumni Association’s Volunteer of the Year.After working as a pharmaceuticals representative, Wil returned to Clemson in 2007 as Senior Director of Alumni Relations.
The executive director is responsible for the planning and daily management of The Clyde V. Madren Continuing Education/Conference Center, The James F. Martin Inn, The John E. Walker Sr. Golf Course and the Summer Camps and Conferences program. As the primary site for on-campus continuing education activities, all programs are managed with a focus to support the vision and mission of Clemson University. In addition, the director serves as liaison with the Clemson University Continuing Education/Conference Center Complex Corporation (CUCE/CCCC), which owns and operates the hotel and golf course.
Having spent over two decades in healthcare administration, Hack retired in 2007 as the President, Regional Facilities Division of the Carolinas Healthcare System, headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina. In his role as President & CEO, Hack is responsible for the direction and leadership of the Clemson University Foundation. The Foundation is organized exclusively for educational and scientific purposes for the benefit of Clemson University, including the receiving of gifts. Hack and his team are responsible for an investment portfolio in excess of $400 million. Hack graduated from Clemson in 1978 with a BS in Accounting and is a Certified Public Accountant (retired; non-practicing). Hack and his wife, Cheryl (class of 1978) have four children, three of whom have attended or currently attend Clemson.
Will Hiott began his career at Clemson University as Curator for the Historic House museums — Fort Hill and the Hanover House in 1990, and assumed his current position as Director of Historic Properties in 1995. During his tenure, the Historic Properties have gained greater visibility and support both from within the University but also on a statewide and national arena. Will oversaw the recent (2000-2003) restoration project at Fort Hill from initial planning designs to reopening. Will earned a bachelor’s degree in history (1983), and a master’s in Public History with a concentration in Historic Preservation and Museum Studies (1986) from the University of South Carolina. Will has done postgraduate study at Clemson University in PRTM, Higher Education, and Public Policy. Will has served as an adjunct instructor of History since 1992. He has written numerous grants, brochures, and articles on the Calhouns and Clemsons, including two chapters for a Thomas Clemson bicentennial biography on Clemson’s Fort Hill Years and Art Collection. Will and his wife, Sue, live in Central with three sons: Davy, Daniel and Nathaniel.
The chief public affairs officer is charged with the responsibility to develop and implement activities to create awareness of and support for the University's mission, activities and priorities with both internal and external audiences. This responsibility is discharged through the management of the departments of News Services (media relations and internal news), Publications and Promotion (marketing, advertising and promotional materials, including Clemson World and the President's Report) and Direct Marketing/Special Projects (direct mail and other targeted constituent communication). In addition, the chief public affairs officer serves as public relations counsel to the president and executive officers of the University and is a member of the president's administrative council.
Helen graduated from Clemson University in 1986 with a degree in Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management. Helen has been with the University since 1987. She began as the Assistant Director when the Visitors Center was located in Tillman Hall. During the last Capital Campaign, Helen worked in Development in the Prospect Management area. In 1998, Helen returned to the Visitors Center as Director and into a newly built facility, a gift from the Class of 1944. Helen lives in Clemson with her husband and three children. She is one of eight Clemson alumni in her family, including her father, who is an honorary alumnus.
