Twenty-four students and sixteen heifers travelled to Columbia in October for the South Carolina State Fair. Clemson won the Herdsmam Award for the Open Show—an award selected for a group's ability to attract and engage the public and for keeping a well-maintained area for the public to visit. Clemson students were at the top of their respective breed classifications in showmanship, and many of the heifers were in the top five classes. Jillian Fain, PhD, was the faculty advisor.

Clemson University recently received a $2,500 student recruiting gift from the US POULTRY Foundation. The check was presented by Charlie Olentine, PhD, Executive Vice President of USPOULTRY, to Glenn Birrenkott, PhD, Professor of Animal & Veterinary Sciences at Clemson University. Clemson was one of 21 U.S. institutions to receive student recruiting funds. "The poultry industry is very important to the South Carolina economy and offers many internship and career opportunities for students in the College of Agriculture, Forestry & Life Sciences," said Birrenkott.
