Welcome to our Graduate Degree Program

The Department of Biological Sciences offers the MS and PhD degrees in Biological Sciences and the MS and PhD degrees in Microbiology. The overall goals of both programs are to develop scientists with strong interdisciplinary skills in research design, critical thinking and communication, as well as expertise in a specific research area. We emphasize basic, discovery-based scholarship, but many faculty and graduate students are involved in applied research as well.

Faculty listed by broad research areas can be found here, and details about specific faculty and their research interests are found here. Many faculty participate in interdisciplinary programs and centers. Incoming students decide on a faculty advisor for their MS or PhD during the application process.

The Department of Biological Sciences also offers an online, non-thesis Master of Biological Sciences designed specifically for K-12 teachers and others interested in biological sciences. Learn more about this program. PLEASE NOTE that the admissions procedure, curriculum, and requirements for the ONLINE program are different from the other graduate programs in this department.

The Biological Sciences graduate program has an active student organization, the Biological Sciences Graduate Student Association (BSGSA). Learn more about the organization and its activities.
