Faculty Hires and Promotions

Dr. W. Scott Whiteside, Associate Professor in Packaging Science, has been awarded tenure. (Fall)

Mr. Andrew R. Hurley has been hired as a Lecturer in the Packaging Science program. He has shared responsibilities between the Department of Packaging Science and the Sonoco Institute of Packaging Design and Graphics. He focuses on teaching packaging design to students and industry personnel. Mr. Hurley was recognized this year by Sealed Air/Cryovac for product innovation and creativity, and by the South Carolina Commissioner's School for Agriculture for his educational contributions. (Fall)

Dr. Julie K. Northcutt was promoted to Professor of Food Science. (Summer)

Faculty Leadership Appointments/Conferences/Workshops

Dr. Felix Barron continued to offer his Better Processing Control School in Greenvile, SC. (December)

The Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP), coordinated by Dr. Cason, celebrated its 40th anniversary. During the past 40 years, EFNEP has helped more than 600,000 children and youth, as well as more than 100,000 adults, gain knowledge and practical skills to make positive behavior changes in the areas of nutrition, food safety, food resource management and physical activity. A recognition and awards celebration was held October 15 and 16. (October)

Dr. Beth Kunkel was appointed a member of the American Dietetic Association Research Committee for 2009-10 of the Board of Directors and House Delegates for a three year term. (July)

Dr. Marge Condrasky coordinated the delivery of the Cooking with a Chef program for School Food Service Managers SIFT training in four SC locations (160 participants). (Summer)

Dr. Julie K. Northcutt offered a seafood HACCP workshop. (Summer)

Dr. Felix H. Barron offered his Better Processing Control School in Mexico and Spain. (Summer)

Dr. Aubrey Coffee was appointed a commissioner on the Research Chefs Association Certification Committee for a term for a two years term, 2009-11.

Dr. Aubrey Coffee has established an International Food and Sensory Course at the Brussels, Belgium. Offered for the first in the Summer of 2009, the course was team-taught by Dr. Coffee and Dr. Haley-Zitin.

 Dr. Aubrey Coffee received a President's Award from the Research Chefs Association for service to the organization and promotion of RCA in academia. (Spring)

Dr. Anthony Pometto was a co-awardee for the AAEE Excellence in Evironmental Engineering Award for his entry "Single cell bio-oil from an integrated fungal lignocellulosic biorefinery" [van Leeuwen, J. (Hans), Samuel Beattie, Tae Hyun Kim, David Grewell, Lawrence Johnson, Earl Hammond, Anthony Pometto III, Diliara Iassonova, Prachand Shresstha and Mickey Vincent]. (April)

Dr. Katherine Cason received the Anita Owen Award for Innovative Nutrition Education from the American Dietetic Association Foundation.

Clemson University Institute of Food Technologists Student Association participated in the Southeast Region College Bowl Competition for the first time at the University of Florida. (March)

Miscellaneous

FSHN is on iTunes U featuring more than 97 podcasts of Nutrition, Diet, and Health, including 11 tracks in Spanish. Clemson on iTunes U provides access to digital audio, video, image and pdf files through a customized version of Apple iTunes. Podcasts are available for students, staff, faculty, and the general public. Dr. Cason serves as the Department iTunes U administrator. FSHN's nutrition, diet and health podcasts were recently featured in an Apple advertisement to promote iTunes U.

2008

News about Laboratory Facilities

Drs. W. Scott Whiteside and John U. McGregor are set to manage the new Cryovac Pilot Plant Retort Processing Laboratory in Newman Hall which opened for business October 2008.  It is jointly managed by FSHN and Packaging Science Departments.  Equipment includes: retort (ridged or flexible containers), continuous inline filler/sealer, kettles, choppers, vacuum sealer, refrigerated/freezer storage, and more. All equipment is moveable except two retorts for easy of matching almost any processing flow. (October)

The FSHN Culinary Lab began full operation in the fall.  Thanks to Drs. Aubrey D. Coffee, Margaret D. Condrasky and John U. McGregor. This world class facility renovation was supported by Mama Mary’s (Greenville, SC) and Electrolux, Inc. (Anderson, SC). (Fall)

Dr. Anthony L. Pometto, III was a co-awardee for the R&D 100 Award entitled "MycoMax". Dr. Pometto was awarded for his research in developing value-added products from dry-grind corn ethanol thin-stillage by fungal processing. (Fall)

Dr. Margaret D. Condrasky received an American Culinary Federation President's Medallion in recognition of superior contributions to the enhancement of the ACF in the area of culinary nutrition education for chef members. (July)
