Immerse into a Spanish learning environment and local culture in the exciting and historic city of Pamplona, Spain in this faculty-led summer program. Investigate the Foods of Spain, in this Spanish immersion program, as it travels from farm to table through sensory evaluation and flavor development, commercial and retail markets, food processing, food safety and sanitation, and food laws and regulations. Also experience the culture first hand through excursions, classes, and interaction with host families.

  • Program dates: May 14 –June 18, 2017
  • Opened to all majors - prerequisite is a 2.5 GPA
  • Non-Clemson students can participate (pays in-state tuition)
  • Appropriate for students in the following programs: Food Science, Nutrition, Spanish, Culinology®, and students interested in having a wonderful international experience while learning how food reaches the consumer.

Program Structure

You will complete 6-credit hours during the 5-week program, IS2100 – Cultural Communication and FDSC4200 – Cultural Exploration of Spanish Foods. Each course meets for 45 contact hours/3 credits. Courses are taught by Clemson faculty and international faculty from Educational Services Pamplona (ESPA) and the Public University of Navarre (UPNA). Classes meet Monday-Thursday, except during the 3rd week when classes meet Monday-Wednesday. Excursions and active learning components required by your courses may be scheduled for Fridays. Prior to departure, you will take a language placement exam to determine your language level.

Where You'll Study

  • ESPA’s Spanish language school is located in a modern building close to the city centre.
  • The school has five classrooms and Wi-Fi free of charge within the school installations.
  • Near the school there are several coffee shops and restaurants where students can enjoy a quiet coffee or have a tapa or pintxo as they are known in Pamplona.
  • UPNA is within walking distance from the Spanish language school.

Where You'll Stay

  • Home stays accommodations (doubles) are used during the program
  • Meal accommodations during the week are half-board (breakfast and dinner)
  • During the weekends, full-board (breakfast, lunch, dinner)
  • Host families are carefully selected by and arrangements are confirmed before arrival.

  •  Tuition (in-state rate) – $3950
  •  Program fee – $1400
  • Transportation (Airfare/train/bus) – $1400 - $1600
