Bachelor's of Science in Food Science

Majoring in food science isn’t just about food; it’s learning the process food takes from seed to our plates as well as the role food plays in health and disease prevention.  Food science applies coursework from multiple science disciplines to improve the safety and quality of foods and to identify the relationship between nutrients and human health. With a food science degree, you can make a difference in people’s lives.

Clemson University offers South Carolina’s only undergraduate degree in food science.  Clemson’s food science program is one of fourteen in the nation that combines the field of nutrition and food technology within one academic department.  Faculty provide expertise in the areas of food chemistry, food microbiology, food safety, food engineering, clinical nutrition, and dietetics working in education, research, and outreach programs.

Food Science & Technology

The food industry is the largest industry in the world. The industry employees thousands of food scientists and technologists to meet the consumer demand for food products that are safe, healthy, convenient, and flavorful. Food scientists work in private industry, education, or for government agencies. The Clemson program allows students to select from several emphasis areas such as business, food packaging, and CulinologyTM to provide depth and breadth of specific content.

Nutrition & Dietetics

Nutrition is a fast-growing discipline devoted to understanding the relationships between nutrients and human health. The nutrition and dietetics curriculum prepares students
for graduate study in nutrition, medicine, dentistry, pre-professional programs, as well as dietetic internship programs to become a Registered Dietitian. The program provides coursework to prepare students for evidence-based practice in clinical, community, and management areas of practice.
